I have been checking the prices of Maximas here in Toronto (Canada) and apparently I can afford something in the 1996 to 1997 range. What I want to know is - is there any meaning ful advantage or difference to a 1997 over a 1996? Is there any problem fixed or feature added with the 1997? How about 1998 - I might be able to swing a rougher, higher mileage 1998 if there was a real reason to prefer that year.

Thanks

There are some minor styling changes between the '96 and '97 model years. Outside, there is a "freshened" front end and rear end. Inside, several elements such as the steering wheel, Bose head unit, and cupholders were redesigned. '97 and '98 models are identical, except some options were made standard for the latter year. Safety-wise, the '97s and later got major structural stiffening because the Maxima was faring poorly on government and IIHS crash tests. I expect Canadian models are structurally identical to American ones; the only differences probably stem from statuatory compliance issues such as daytime running lights.

Maximas have proven to be remarkably reliable; still, you'll want to find one with as little miles as possible. As mzmtg said, go for the newest and nicest you can afford. If you're willing to settle for an automatic transmission, you'll have a much easier time finding the trim level and options packages that suit your needs. 5-speeds tend to be in high demand and are therefore scarce.

Good luck!

I was talking purely functional, sorry for the misunderstanding.
