Be aware, though. Harold got a GREAT deal on this. If I could do it for this cheap I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Nissan Quoted 4G's for the whole thing (It's nissan, duh it's a rip-off). AAMCO quoted me over 1000 including some parts. (And I gave him harold's instructions.)

If you want a good tranny it's gonna cost you 4-900 bucks.

...Ever put your tranny in 2nd or 1st gear ?(Auto). Isn't that torque great? Well, a 5spd is even torqueir throughout the gears !! Sometimes makes me wanna droOl in envy...

so you think to have it done professionally it would cost around $2000? (i know Harold's buddy had a doner car and they did all the work themselves) $1000+ for labor and $400-900 for the transmission? my friend and i were jokingly devising an insurance scam so i could get stick but this is a lot less expensive than i thought it would be.

1,500-2000 dollars, yes. Don't let people talk you into trading your car. If your like me, you've done way to much to it and you bought it with all the right trims to suit you. There's too many things I like about "MY" max to trade it in.

Also remember once your automatic is out, you could sell that. I have a '95 with only 55.5k miles on it, so I could pretty much be dead even as far as the transmission goes. Then, only thing left is labor costs...

What if I could find someone who is selling their 5 speed Maxima because they want an auto not a 5 speed. I know I could make my auto a stick but would the auto go into a 5 speed the same way? I doubt that would happen but its worth looking in to if one of us gets REALLY lucky.

Well, I thought about finding a 5spd max. But, it's VERY rare you find a '95 maxima w/only 54k miles on it. I got lucky. My max is in great condition (mechanically wise), and is an SE, and the people chose all the little things that I love. Not to mention the 4g's i've already put into it.

The tranny swap would work perfectly if done right. Some people who are pessimist's say that it'll never be like a stock 5spd, but they're all foo's. Just ask Harold, he loves it and says its working as good or better than a max with stock 5spd.

I'm gonna sell a ****-load of stuff on ebay and hope to save enough money for so I can at least daydream about a conversion.

Ford Taurus SHO Conversion Help

I have a 1993 Auto Ford Taurus SHO in which the tranny won't shift out of first gear. I would love to do a 5speed conversion.
Anyone have any leads to find info on this or any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

But isn't the auto engine a different block then the stick? I thought the auto had a little more displacement to try and compensate for the power loss through the auto tranny... Might not bolt up, but it's something to look into.

Cool:

Those are very nice looking instructions...

But if I don't have a totalled wrecked car, where else do I get a working 5 speed tranny? Anybody have any contacts for shops that will sell one aside from the dealer? And are the gear ratios exactly the same for all model years of the 4th gen?

later.

All 4Gen Maximas are powered by the same 3.0 liter V6 engine.

yes, he was quoting about the SHO

but in response to the question about getting a 5spd tranny...

actually, my 1st 5spd tranny from that wrecked car didn't work.. the shifting rod was bent inside the tranny.. so on a 0day notice, being 12hours from home, I HAD to get another 5spd tranny.. I ended up buying from a local yard (local to jacksonville, fl that is) for 500$ w/ 40k on it I think.. very good deal if you ask me, 30day (I think, might have been 90) warranty too!

call yards, some of them do, but some ask 1000$+ for them, so dont get ripped off.. and remember, if it has to be shipped - they are only like 100$ or less to ship...

I would say same block, just bored out to 3.2L from 3.0L and the 5sp conversion on the max theoretically will work as long as you get all the parts you need to make the auto car be like a 5 sp car as it would come from the factory.

Thanks for everyones input regarding the Ford Taurus SHO Auto to 5speed conversion. I realized this is a 4th gen max forum, I was unable to locate a decent Ford Taurus SHO forum with active members. I apologize for anyones time being wasted. I ended up finding a couple shops that only work on SHOs. One of which www.shoshop.com , is located in Califorina. I ended up calling them on the phone and speaking with one of the mechanics. We came to the conclusion this conversion is not worth it. Apparently EVERYTHING is different and would exceed the cost of getting a new/rebuilt auto tranny by a lot. I might as well buy a used 5speed SHO. Oh well, my auto SHO will sit in the driveway for now
I found some good "racing trannys" I may get. Like ones used in circuit racing. One of my friends jsut won his class in circuit racing. =) He won with his new civic EX 5 speed against some z28 camero. =) Gotta love circuit racing, it is all about consistancy.

Peace out thanks again everyone!

Nope no one has ever done that...not at all, thats why we don't have a search function, and why 4th gens that have done it are not refered to as 4.5 gens...you bumped an 8 year old thread to ask that...

its been done...trying look around the site more (hint hint All motor)...its not cheap around 1-4k or more if you do the whole 3.5 with 6sp.

Seriously. I guess searching was beyond the newb's power, or something. God forbid they do something simple like that.

Well I should rephrase what I said. He obviously did search, just not well enough. Bet he grabbed the first thread he saw in search and posted that question.

And as a result, this is the fail that we have.
