New knock sensor and barometer???

My brother has a 1996 SE 5-speed with roughly 85,000 miles on it.

He is not mechanically inclined, but he got a Check Engine Light and took it to a dealer. They told him it needs a new knock sensor and barometric sensor. They want $600.

I've never heard of a knock sensor going bad, and come to think of it, I've not heard of a barometric sensor going bad. In my 93 Probe GT, the barometric sensor is even integrated into the engine management computer itself.

So I'm wondering two things:

1. Is the dealership reading some codes that might have been triggered for another reason, and just assuming that stuff needs to be replaced? Or perhaps just trying to cash in? Could there be a TSB or recall on eiher of these?

2. If they really need to be replaced, how difficult is it, and where could we get new parts at a fair price? I know for the most part, knock sensors are easy to replace.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

The 4th gens don't have a barometric sensor, only an ambient temperature sensor and a mass air flow sensor. Go to another shop.
