- Dashboard switch is in the off position.
- Driver steps on the brake pedal.
- Driver steps on the clutch pedal (5-speed).
- Driver presses ASCD cancel switch.
- Vehicle Speed Sensor indicates speed outside ASCD operating range.
Check each of these items. The location of most of these components is shown in the Chilton repair manual on page 6-11.
The brake pedal switch is probably the most heavily used component in the ASCD system. That's because it is operated every time the driver steps on the brakes, regardless of whether the Cruise is engaged. The part that works hardest is likely to be the part that fails first.
Check fuse #12 (7.5 amps) in the passenger compartment fuse block. This is the lowest fuse in the middle column of fuses.
Check the ASCD relay in the engine compartment. (ASCD = Automatic Speed Control Device.) Relay box #1 is on the passenger's side of the engine compartment. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the latches and lift the relay box cover up and away. The legend on the relay box cover identifies the position of the ASCD relay. It is blue (5-speed) or brown (automatic transmission). All relays of like color are interchangeable. Exchange the ASCD relay with any other of the same color.
Verify that the wires and vacuum hoses which attach to the ASCD actuator are intact and connected.
There could be other faults (bad ASCD actuator, bad ASCD control unit) but these are less probable.
