Can you repaint/take off chrome trim around windows on GXEs?

I really don't like that nasty chrome trim around the windows. Can it be taken off and replaced with black trim? perhaps sanded down or something? I also don't like the chrome door handles, but I guess they need to be replaced or repainted. Does the repainting involve them being taken off the car? I really would like to get rid of as much chrome as possible, it's too tacky on my superblack car. thanks

aye, you dissapoint me mister . If you want to swap, you need to buy black SE door handles. same with the trim. I know that those window trims can be swapped on e46's, so it might be possible. I just think once you take that trim off, it might be tough to get it to fit back on there perfectly. I guess is you do a good glue job, it should be ok. Be the first one to do it!!!!!!

Nyce, go down to your local Nissan dealer and buy the parts. Then go to your local body shop...they should have no problem hookin' you up.

Yea that chrome looks tacky...

I tried to buy black doorhandles from a member of this forum once. He lied to me and told me that they were exterior door handles. I thought great, so much for these chrome things. Turns out they were interior door handles, and his ad specifically said exterior. I tried to email him, but his listed email address wasn't working anymore... $30 down the drain. I still have some black interior door handles if anyone wants them. I haven't seen the bastard on here since he jacked me for my $30.

You can buy the stuff from a dealer, but it's something like $300 for everything. I had to replace all mine because the first guy to do my bodywork f!cked them all up when he was sanding down the car. (not the guy that painted my car)

woa...

Well, I talked to my friends cousin who owns a body/repair shop and he told me something like that would cost me 400+ $ in parts alone, because the dealer sells door handles with the entire assembly that goes into the door. But what does that guy know, he fixes taxies and Car services
Anyways, I was thinking more of sanding them down myself and painting them, or getting a body shop to do it. The chrome window trim looks stupid. I'm also going to do something about my grille, I had an idea of taking out the middle bar and putting mesh on the whole thing and painting it black..... Anyways, Nick, a superblack GXE doesn't look that good with chrome door handles, if I add a spoiler and get rid of the chrome, then add 20% tint (this week) it would look off the hook, you'll never know it's a GXE

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've had no luck finding used parts for my max in junkyards so far. I'm still looking for leather and factory spoiler. If I can find an SE in a junkyard I'll ask them to rip out the door handles along with the window trim carefully.

Well

Let me know how you make on out this endever. I had some punk's try and break into my car, and they stuck a screwdriver in between the crome trim and the door. Needless to say they bent it out and I had a hard time to get it looking good again. I wondered how much replacing the trim would be. Then they tried the side of the door scratched the paint and bent the door alittle. Then after they figured out they could not open the door they broke the little back window. You know what they stole.... NOTHING god dam punk *** kids.

Thanks

well, I'm not very much into chrome, I think it's better on a white car like you have, since it's less noticeable I'd rather have that jet black look with dark tint and no chrome anywhere.

i painted all my chrome moldings on my 95 gle with flat black bumber and trim paint and used bulldog adhehesion promoter. i taped everything off on the car, cleaned the moldings with alchol, did like 3 coats of the promoter and about 7 VERY thin coats of the flat black and used a heat gun between coats to dry. alot of people said that the paint would chip but i guess thats if you do it half assed. i did mine probably about 6 months ago and still dont have one chip on it. and thats with going through a car wash from time to time.. ill post some pics for ya.. sorry i dont know how to just make them show without u guys having to download them.

done.. (close up).. notice i only painted the chrome part in the middle of the molding, rather than the entire molding. came out good, color matches perfect.. dont use a clearcoat.. hope this helps some. total cost of about $12 bucks. word of advice, spend the extra few dollars and get the blue painters masking tape. if you use the cheap yellow one you will spend hours trying to get the glue off your car.

I think I recognize those rims, I saw your car in 711 parking lot on Hylan New Dorp lane a loong time ago at night, back when i had my 3rd gen, i just remembered it was lowered and had no emblem on the grille.
Thanks for the pics. That looks like a little work, but I might try it now that I know it can be done

yeah that looks a LOT better. especially with tinted windows.. I think i'm going to try it! Where did you get the promoter and the paint? Also, why do you advise not to use clear coat? Wouldn't it help protect the finish when it's all set and done?

The chrome grille has to go. Superblack max with a superblack grille looks so much better.

the bumper and trim paint does not require a clearcoat and advises not to use one. i wouldnt recomend using one either because i think it give you and uneven finish. some parts would be glossy and some flat. aside from that bumber and trim paint is flexible, so it doesnt crack. im not sure about most clear coats. one crack in the clear coat, water will start to get under it and itll just all come off anyway.

I was too thinking of getting rid of chrome trim around windows and getting black exterior door handles. Called up some used parts shops and they quoted me $200 for 4 handles. I said **** it, I better spend those money on mods.

I guess i'm just different........

I love the chrome trim around the doors but I hate the chrome door handles, the chrome grill isn't the best looking that i've seen but doesn't look too bad w/the clear corners.

Ha! A man after my own heart - lol. Seriously, I'm totally with you NYC. One of the first things I did was kill all my chrome. For the window trim, you can 1) Paint your existing trim black, 2) You can paint your existing trim body color (in your case black - in my case white) or 3) You can purchase all 12 pieces made for the SE. I went with painting them body color. They were a pain to take off but can be done if you are slow and careful (e-mail me if you plan to do this so I can give you instructions ahead of time). They have held up fine for over a year. As for the handles, I had mine painted body color and they are perfect. Yes, they need to come off the car to do it right. Good luck and let me know if I can help with anything else.
