you r kidding me right? lets see the basic stock version vs a sportier version with options standard like gauges, sometimes 5-speed, a little stiffer springs, and i believe it has a diferent muffler too

Being the owner of a 2k2SE and 97SE, I must say the 97-99 SE's look the best of any Maxima stock to me. Mechanically they are very similiar except for a few interior differences tighter suspension and a few other exterior trim things.

I love the SE. But, hey, I got a very good price on my very-clean-low-mile GXE with sunroof and C&C package. I guess if i were rich, I would go for the SE. Wait, did i say rich? right, sorry, i should say i'll get a 911 turbo.

Its been proven that even though the GXE is cheaper then the SE, you could buy a GXE and use the price difference to mod it and end up with a much better car. Of course that doesn't work on new max's since they don't offer a manual transmission in GXE's anymore. Myself, i'm happy with my GLE but wish i had a 5 speed.

There is no easy answer to this question. Depends on what you like to do as a car owner. If you want to go and buy a bunch of parts and do a bunch of work (or get a bunch of work done for you for cheap), you can have a GXE-made-SE for a little cheaper than what you might find a comparable SE for. Whatever you do, go manual transmission.
Or if you really dont care about all the extra frills and suspension differences the SE has, get a GXE. My opinion? Test drive a few manual SEs and a few manual GXEs. Look at them. See which one you want. If you're into working on/modding cars (not just 'I like to buy mods and have people install them' kind-of 'into'), then the GXE might be the best bet.
In reference to the Bose system in SEs, I believe there are 2 door speakers, 2 rear speakers, and 2 tweeters up front. The bose system is "limited" in many ways, but sounds nice for high and mid-intensive music.

Although, I wish I had more than 4 speakers...

Yeah, GLE never gets involved. They are too heavy and slow to even contend. At least you can play with your pop out drawer and stroke your fuzzy A-pillars as you watch my lightweight, no extra equipment havin, tailights disappear in front of you.

well....
It depends..
GXEs don't come stock with leather, automatic climate control, a few other things but.. you save some $ by not getting this crap, because not everyone cares about it or needs it. All the extra goodies that come with the SE, can be added yourself.. which is what I plan on doing.
Besides, other little things that come stock on the SE which make the cost higher you will probably upgrade later on even if you have an SE anyways, like rims, ( might go bigger, different design), white face gauges (indiglos), spoiler, suspension etc... However, it would help having an SE to start with, since I am having a tough time locating parts... Besides, i hate the chrome door handles, trim and grille... all of which will be gone eventually.

SE baby, all the way. I've had both, GXE and SE and other then the GXE being a little tiny bit faster, I would go with SE in a heartbeat. Love those white guages.

I like those white gages too! Some people actually get in my car and think it's aftermarket. The indiglows don't quite do it for me. Now, if indiglows had the kind of glowing displays they have in Lexuses, then I'd be impressed!
