That is not really the question.

I have planned on putting new springs on my car for quite some time. But, I was planning on doing it in the spring.

Well, I just got my new wheels 17X8 and now my car REALLY looks like a 4X4.

So here is my question....how long will stock struts work with lowering springs. I don't have the $$$ to buy both springs and struts now...so its either neither until the spring, or just springs now.

Thanks.

IMO, be patient. You might as well wait until you can do the springs AND the struts at the same time. It wouldn't make sense to do springs only. Your stock struts would let you bounce all over the place. Besides, you'll have to do the install twice if you do this in two steps. Double labor equals double expense. It's worth the wait.

I agree with bullseye. The installation is expensive, so if you do it, get both the springs and shocks done at the same time.

Just wait until you can afford to get both. Um, just curious, but by saying that you can't afford to buy the mods now, it sounds as if you are spending all your extra cash on modding out the car.

I used to do that, but reflecting upon it, it was sorta dumb. I mean, it's only a car! I like my mods, but I think I could've spent the money better than buying mods for the car. Don't let this stop you from modding. I just wanted to warn you about "mod fever" that's all.

Get a manual, like haynes, which gives you all the instructions. Rent a spring compressor from the autoparts store, may even be free to borrow. I plan on doing this myself, same situation. Big wheels, big gap, not enough money,or desire to change shocks/struts. Besides, might as well kill your stockers.

I have GC coil-overs, and I logged about 20k miles with them all the way down before they started to bounce. However, thats with a 3" drop. With just lowering springs, you could definetly make them last longer. Also, do the spring install yourself. Its not that hard. It took me 3 hrs. to install my coil-overs, and the local parts store around here will let you borrow a spring compressor for free.

lower or not to

I have a 95 GLE that I lowered using Progressive Springs which lowered the front 1.8 inches and the rear 1.4 inches. The front struts are working just fine, but I just recently replaced the rear ones(which I believe I ruined by my method of installation) with of all things, Autozone brand, (lifetime warranty) and the car actually rides to me like a Camaro/Firebird would ride. I know this sounds cheap, but I was strapped for cash and for a lifetime warranty, I figured this was not a bad deal. I was mainly more interested in getting rid of the 4x4 look because the 17x7 with 235/45/17 did make it look like @*%$!#!! So I say, if you want corvette performance, buy a corvette, or you could settle for what I got. A sweet looking 95 MAX!

I JUST GOT MINE SPRINGS INST. WITH STOCK SHOCKS AND WHEELS. I'M PLANNING TO GET MY WHEELS IN 2 WEEKS. DON'T WANT THAT 4X4 LOOK WITH 18" WHEELS. THE FRONT DOES BOUNCE A LITTLE WHEN GOING OVER BIG BUMPS. BUT I WILL CHANGE THE SHOCKS IN ABOUT 2 MONTHS.

I would recommend you to go with " Ground Control " coil over , that's what i have on my car. The most important thing is strut. you GOT to change it. i don't really care what brand. most of the people go for Tokiko. I use KYB strut and never had any problem with the ride. I lower it for 3.25" . I think Eric saw my car from the last meet in SF, right? Anyways, you can choose any brand u want but lower it at least 2.5" .....Later

If you want to save money, you should do springs/shocks at the same time. However, your stock shocks should last awhile with the lowering springs provided that you trim and install the bumpstops correctly. Also, be sure to get an alignment when you modify your suspension.
