Sunroof Problem
I have a 96 SE. Yesterday I tried to close the sunroof and it wouldn't. The motor is running but it will not close. I had to push the sunroof with my hand at the same time as pushing the button to get it to close. Anybody have any experience with this problem? Any suggestions?

guide wire possibly broken
I hate to say it, but I think your guide wire is broken. This has happened to a few members here including me! The motor still whirs but the roof won't close. In my case, only one side appears to have broken so I got it closed by "helping" the one broken side along.
The dealer fix for this is about $1200. I haven't fix it yet. Besides, winter is coming anyway. Maybe in the spring.
Let us know what you find out.

Welcome to the club!!
At 120,000+ miles this is the only problem ever with my Maxi. I am sooooo ****ed. It happened maybe 3-4 months ago. Aweful, aweful day. I remember where I as, where I was going, what CD was playing, etc. when I tried to close it and nothing happened.
I got a quote of $1400 from the dealer and I have done enough homework to know that is what it will cost and that is what is needed. You didn't mention but when you close it by hand, does it seal up completely? Mine does not. Right now, I have two wood shims hammer-tapped in there to keep the rear glass flush with the roof.
Thanks a lot for reminding me and getting me thinking about it again NUGE! :P Just kidding.
Let us know how it goes.

OMG...this happend to me last night. It seems like one side wants to close but the other does not. $1200? I hope not. The sunroof is stuck open right now. What is the guide wire? Does it break or get stuck? The motor almost seems dead now that I have tried too close it a couple of times. But it closes like an inch with difficulty but it goes back to fully open with no problems. Arrggg!!

I was gonna say at least you have a sun roof.
But 1200 or so, Dizzzzammm!!! Keep the thing!
Nah sorry, I hope it works out for ya. Try to avoid the dealership for anything but engine work. Engine work is the only thing I let them do. Check out some custom sunroof places, I know theres a few my way.

Re: I was gonna say at least you have a sun roof.
I had a problem with my sunroof, but it was a sunroof that would not close without assistance.
It would open just fine though. And when I tried to close it, it would get stuck and refuse to move. Needed lotsa lube, works fine now.
Think whoever owned it before didn't use it a whole lot.

Same thing happened to me dealer wanted $1395.00 to fix it. They do not sell just the parts you have to buy the track asembley which runs $527.00 around here. That's if you want to fix it yourself. It's not that hard(just take you time and do not force anything)all you have to do is drop your headliner. You may even be able to re-attach the cable to the guide, that's what I did on mine then I soldered it. Of course the other side has now come loose and I need to fix it, but the side that I fixed first is still holding strong. Must be something with 95 and 96 max's.

Hey, thanks for the inspiration! Maybe I will give it a shot myself. $1400 is just too much to spend. I do miss the use of my sunroof very much. I just thought fixing it would be out of my legue. Is it hard to get the headliner down? So are you saying you fixed yours for free or it was the $527? I will probably attck it during winter break - be prepared for some e-mails then! Thanks.

I also have an occasional problem with my 97's sunroof. If i try to close any amout of my windows and close my sunroof (from being fully open), i hear a *Click* sound and my sunroof stops moving, but my window will keep going. after about 5-10 seconds, i will hear a second *click* sound and the sunroof will resume closing. Anyone know what is going on? It doesn't happen all the time, but happens especially when i try to close all 4 windows and the sunroof at the same time, and when the car is not running but the key is turned. Thanks

I also have a 96 SE. When this problem occured in my max I brought a used sunroof assembly for $200 at car-part.com Junk yards from around the nation are located there and the assembly runs from $550 to $200. I got it replaced for $150 and it works fine...

I had a related problem. The driver's side back end of the sunroof glass was not flush with the molding and was 1/4 lower. The Dealer told me it was a two hour minimum job to see if a shim would work (not likely they said) They quoted me the general $1350 to install a whole new glass and track assembly. I took it to a custom van shop where they installed the appropriate sized, undetectabl, shim in 20 minutes and charged me a whopping $25.00. Worked like a charm! My sunroof does still operate and I use it all the time
I wrote a "serious" letter to Nissan and got comped a pair of free LOF changes. Haven't been to that dealer since.
Since you cable has snapped, I suggest you close the glass sunroof and have permanent shims installed. At least you can open the sunshade on those cold winter days and enjoy the greenhouse effect.
