I just bought a set of Eibach springs for my Max. I'm planning to install them this weekend with my stock struts. Is it necessary for me to change the stock struts to aftermarket struts for any reason other than improved handling?

It's not necessary, but highly recommended. My car had only 12K miles on it when I lowered it, so I kept the stock struts on for the time being. By 30K, all four were blown. If you've got the money and/or you've got high mileage on the car, I'd go ahead and purchase some aftermarket struts....it'll also save you from being charged twice for installation if you are getting them installed by a mechanic.
