What am I doing wrong with these rear struts?

My KYB AGX rear struts blew about 2 months ago. So I put some other KYB's on. There is now a rattling from the rear everytime I go over a bump. It wasn't rattling at first but over the last month or so it has started.

But the kicker now is that the rears seem to be blown again(there is oil all over them) except it doesn't ride like it, they aren't very bouncy like the other were when they blew.

So why are the rears rattling like they are? I believe I installed correctly. The springs are sitting on the strut right and I put the rubber on the bottom of the spring so it wouldn't be metal on metal. Everything is tight. I mean, there are only 3 bolts that could be loose. Any ideas on something I am doing wrong?

Anybody? I know the rear strut is an easy install and plenty of people have done it. Anything come to mind on what I could have done wrong?

Make sure those are the correct struts for the car, correct part number. Otherwise you may have installed them incorrectly, this may help.

could be the bushing in the strut mount.

when my rears started to rattle while going over bumps, i found that the bushing at the top was bad and allowed the strut's rod to lean to the side and tap the metal surrounding it. new bushings stopped the rattle. this problem only happened after i had replaced the original struts.

That seems like it could be the sound. It sounds like a metal clanking sound but I really don't think it's the spring, more like the strut rod itself. Thanks for looking out, I'll see if that fixes it.

3?
Arent there three on the strut top - two on the sides (12 mm) and the one middle one from the shock (14 mm) - and one on the bottom (17 mm) holding it in?
Not sure if you just didnt count it as a bolt, or you overlooked something.

I think you are having the same problem I am having, here is a thread I started http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=403309

it has been very frustrating to me. I have also changed my AGX's and the problem is still there. What springs are you running?

I'm talking about the rear not the front. When I counted 3, I was talking about the bolts that actually hold the strut to the car. 4 total if you count the one on the strut itself.

H&R

I was gonna try to replace all the bushings on the strut assymbly and see if that helps. They all appeared fine but looks may be deceiving.

Yeah, i was talking about the rears.
I think the fronts have 5, 3 on top and 2 holding the bottom in.

Anyway, good luck with your fix.

I had the same noise. I found out it was from not properly securing the piston rod nut (some people call this the top hat nut). This allowed the piston rod to rattle around inside the bushing and eventually all the beating made the hole in the bushing larger, which produced more noise. I think the trip is to make sure you torque down piston rod nut securely to spec to make sure it draws all the parts together tightly. I chase after that clunking noise for a long time before I figured it out. Rich
