Go to Pep Boys or Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts and ask them about the rear brake piston compressor tool. I think the large kits are pretty expensive, but maybe you can get just the one size for the maxima.... I have only seen complete sets with different sizes.

The way to compress your rear caliper on the maxima, is turning the cilinder. No compressor kit well help you. At least that's how my 99 was. It took me about an hour to figure this out, but eventualy I got the damn thing to compress. Just turn it, and it will push back.

Ah, actually, they make this tool that has a piece that fits into the notches on the piston. Kits come with a set of different sized pieces, and a tool that turns them.

If you have a pair of needle nose pliers, then use those. There is really no need for any special tools. Just open the pliers and stick each end in the groove on the piston. Turn clockwise. Voila, works like a charm. I've recently done 2 brake jobs using the plier method; my 95 and my dad's 98. Make sure to line up the grooves after you turn them.

Yet another wasted thread, as the sticky post linked above had this info already.

True true. The sticky was where I found out how to do it in the first place. There are alot of useful info there, but not everyone uses it. Oh well.

The amazing part is that you'll probably see another new thread on this same subject in the near future.

pliers are fine, but can gauge the piston. if you have access to the kit, use it.

I just did my brakes today and we got the two fronts and the left rear done. Now the right rear we had to leave it the way it was with the old pads. The caliber won't compress all the way. I kept using the pliers and turning and turning until it got to the point where it seemed like it barely moved or didn't move at all even though we were still turning it. I just bought the tool and plan to work on it tomorrow. Anybody know what I should do or what is the problem? Turbo95Max (Matthel) said to spray some wd40 and that didn't work........Help someone please........

I have heard people who had this exact problem. You have to not only turn, but also push in whilst turning. If you can't generate sufficient force, then that tool that allows you to turn AND deliver the push is exactly what you need. Let us know how that tool worked out.

I did mine with the pliers just fine.

A plain jane "caliper spreader" will work for the front but for the rears you need the male locking points to turn. Let us know how that tool worked out.
