239,000 miles ??? ride looks sweet though

long story short, just wrecked my 96 GLE last friday. got 5k to play with now.

this was JUST posted on craigslist in the past hour.
ad looked too good to be true. GLE with sunroof, leather, spoiler, 99 SE alloys, sick ride....but i called the guy and he says it has 239,000 miles on it. plus the volume **** is finnicky - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt or sometimes its too sensitive and blasts the sound.

but 3500 bux?
KBB has this car for around 4500.

heres the ad.

There is NO WAY I would pay that much.

Look for something with lower mileage + 5 spd

Phew man that looks nice. Its high in mileage but that just opens the door for other, lower mileage opportunities.

Manual or auto?

Check for damage, lift up carpets, trunk carpeting, check air filter(see if its been changed. this will tell you a lot about "meticulous" maitenance.). Obviously test drive, listen for bad bearings, CVs, etc...Im sure with the high mileage though, your things like bushings, cvs etc...have either been replaced or definitely need it.

the interior could be kind of thrashed, and 239,000 is quite a lot of mile on it, i got my 98 SE with 5-speed for 4000 with about 125,000 on it.

Ok I'm bored. What about infiniti I30?
Also, if you have a buddy who goes to car auctions you could try that too. You can find decent maximas on auctions for a dirt cheap nowadays. (btw, I bought my max from the auction with a help of a family friend who is a dealer)

Agreed. Minus the black floor mats that interior is clean. Very.

Dont trust 1 pic. Especially the ones to lazy to actually take a GOOD pic...if that's their motivation for selling the car, wonder what their motivation for taking care of the car was like?

Oh, and remember to check the things I mentioned before.

this has 100k on the engine, one owner. 99 SE with all the options - leather, sunroof, etc. the ONLY downside its its turquoise/green exterior color and its price. i would offer 4500 to them if the car is mechanically sound.

$2000 for a full out good paintjob. I would keep looking for a lower mileage 5 spd tho....

why 5 speed? what are the advantageS? basically i would have to learn to drive a clutch. i grew up in the heart of NYC, no need for manuals there cuz you drive 200 feet and then stop again. im a good driver, but it seems like worrying about changing gears would take away from payin attention to the road. are manual trannys less likely to break? what are the major advantages, other than having more control?

I agree. It reminds me of my Maxima except mine has leather seats.

But the condition of the engine is the most important thing. And be sure to start the car cold when you drive it. Cars are the most tempermental the first time you start them. Good luck, post pics of your new ride when you get it

The advantages are
1 For starters, you can control the shift points
2 Also they are much more fun to drive, and you shouldnt have to look down to shift.
3 Cheaper and much easier to fix than an auto
4 A maxima should only come in manual in my opinion!!!!

i'm feelin these 2. black se and green looks like a gle (hate the gold but you can change it out fairly cheap). both under 100k. can't believe how cheap these are. i bet you could STEAL the se ($3200 OBO).

you say manual is cheaper? you mean cheaper to replace?

is a manual tranny more durable than an automatic? less durable?

No go. Check the for sale thread here. Can find cars with mileage cut in half for the same price (with some mods, etc.). And with cars here, you know that the owners have taken good care of them.

If you are serious about buying one you already should have looked at this one. 5spd, fully loaded and only 89K, what are you waiting for?

I paid $4k for 97 5sp with 74k miles but GXE - no spoiler, no ABS, no premium sound or leather seats. But engine is practically brand new and with the 5sp and a few minor imprvmnts it just rips pieces of pavement all the way to 3rd.

My pros for 5 sp are
-- cheaper to buy + cheaper to fix + usually no trans fix unless u race.
-- control shift points = better performance
-- manual transmissions have higher efficiency than automatics. They have less energy loss while transmitting the torque to the wheels. Thats one of the reasons they are better on gas.

I recently saw an SE manual in the south FL flyer for $2000, just look around newspaper, etc there's deals out there....u just gotta go and find them.

edit: Driving a manual isn't that hard, u can teach urself in one day- the longer u drive the better u'll get. On the flip side, with traffic and how it is here in SO FL a manual is not as fun....N->1st,2nd->back to neutral......good luck.

i think ive decided against the 5 speed. seems fun and i would like to be in more control of my car, but the traffic around here is so heavy it just wouldnt be fun. plus theres a light every quarter mile. if i was in the country, id be in one in a second.
