Starting issues, 95mt

Hey guys,

Been a long time since I've been on, and longer since my car would start. I have a 95 se with manual trans, I have replaced:

Starter
Cam/crank position senors
plugs
temp sensor
and everything else you could probably think of..

Anyway the car refuses to start, the plugs get soaked from cranking over, and the tail pipe indicates real rich conditions. Now the odd part is that in the few times I could get it running since I got scammed, the thing was a freaking animal with no issues in driving it. I just don't follow whats going on with it now. It is throwing a TON of codes, all pertaining to emmissions, likely due to the fact that the exhaust sytem is full of carbon at this point from failed starting attempts.

If anybody has any clue as to what my issue may be please let me know. FYI I grounded the **** out of it so that should not be the issue.

grounding issue I'm almost positive. my car did the same thing for the last few months. I added a large 4 gauge ground to one of the starter bolts and the thing starts up like a brand new car now. lots of folks have experienced this issue. there's a 10 page thread about it somewhere with people describing the same issue and tons of people saying that when they put a proper ground on their starter, the issue was solved.

Grounding it was not the solution for me, what I am wondering is if I should run a ground directly to my ecu and see if that helps. I have mine grounded out with 4ga from the tranny, starter, engine and body all to the battery, so I am pretty darn sure that isn't my issue.

this summer after i got done replacing my clutch my maxima did the same thing you are describing. i did run the grounds like you talk about. all from tranny, starter, block to battery. none of that worked. then i ran one more from my block to the tranny housing and it started right up and i have never had a prob sense. so make sure you have a good ground from the block to the tranny housing.

tighten the tranny bolts. i regrounded everything...then realized the bolts were loose on the trans. starts up perfectly now after 6 months of issues.

oops sorry I didn't read your entire post, if I had, I would have noticed that your last line said that you had already tried grounding it. sorry for that.

Adding ground wires is rediculous and not the correct fix. more than likely you have to pull the tranny out and clean up the bellhousing mating surgaces on both the engine and trans with a small grinder with 3m roloc discs.

I don't know if you mean just in this situation (since he already said that ground wires didn't help) or if you mean in any situation, but in some situations (not this one) it is. Bad or insufficient grounding can cause a plethora of problems, including difficult starts.

well i see you said you change out the crank sensor, but you didn't mention you changed one or both,so make sure you test and change out both(REF and POS crank position sensors),cause if one is bad,it won't start too.

Ok, I wrote the post in a bit of a hurry, what it should have said is that I have changed every sensor related to starting that I am aware of and frankly its a little expensive! So today I am going to grab a new set of plugs, a spark tester, and try to ground the tranny to the motor ( its a short term TEST for crying out loud) and see what we get. If it works awesome, if not well I just wasted more time/money on nothing and I can continue to try other options.

I am left to think that if this doesn't work I may be looking at ecu issues or a bad wiring harness or something of that nature, I just don't know as of yet. I bought the car 4 years ago and still have driven it all of 4 times, I'm not really feeling good about the investment. I would like to get SOME use out of it before just calling it quits and sending it on its way.

Definately don't have spark or certainly not good spark, I didn't get much further than that, but atleast now I have an idea why it won't start... now WHY DON'T I HAVE SPARK? I have changes all the sensors that have to do with starting.. new plugs.. So I'm thinking I have only a few avenues left, condensor, ecu, ignition switch (replaced but I guess theres no guarantee on a used one..) or I STILL have a bad sensor that says NO to spark somewhere. Where would you guys start?

Check the coil pack that's not firing. Do you mean to say that you don't get a spark on all cylinders?
