Cleaning IACV

Finally got my gaskets from the dealer, altogether is cost 6.12 total . Will be working on it this week.

These steps are great help. My TB and plenum were coated with oil on the inside (butterfly was wet around the edges). Is that normal?

uhhhh......ya gotta use the black plastic screw to adjust the idle back to ~750. That's the result of effectively cleaning your IACV (air actually flows thru it now).

Since cleaning the TB, I got 432 miles on a tank ...and that was before the low fuel light came on. After 158K miles on the clock...that's pretty good. I figure that's about 27MPG

I still have yet to do the IAC!

I love this site.

anybody run into a problem taking off the iacv, i cleaned my maf sensor and TB today but couldnt get the iacv off. Dat sh*t was stuck on and the bolt would not budge to come off.

use an open ended wrench, place it on the stuck bolt and slightly with increasing pressure hit the wrench with a hammer - guaranteed to come off

sorry about bumping up an older thread, but is cleaning the entire upper and lower intake manifold worth it?, I mean If I am going to take of the IACV, Tb and I will probably to the EGR also, would there be any benifts to cleaing up the entire Manifold?

to do the things you listed you dont take off the manifolds just makin sure you know that, and no there is no point to clean them because the oil will muck them up pretty quick

Ok, I have a strange quesiton: while coming to a stop at a light (2 times over 3 days) I noticed the RPM's suddenly shoot up and I can feel the car shift into 2nd gear. I slam on the break to come to a full stop and throw the car into nutral. The car bucks like a MF and the RPM's come down. I put it in drive and everything runs fine. While researching this in the forum, I keep coming back to the IACV issue. I've had my car from 40k to now: 136k and I've never cleaned the IACV.

Could this really be my problem? I have bought a gasket for a whopping $1.97. Again, I've never cleaned this, but am I to assume that all I need to do is

remove the IACV unit with the nuts/bolts
clean the hell out of it with a cleaner/towels/tooth brush
ensure there is a clean surface in which the new gasket will connect to and replace
tighten the IACV unit back into position?

Could this be my problem? If so, I love simple things!!!

could have a problem with your tps. Check the continuity on it.

how do you clean the plungers for the purple and the pink ones? do you unscrew the thing where the plugs are connected to (the long gold hexagon rod thingy)? i removed that and there wasn't really any carbon build up. maybe i removed the wrong thing...

My 98 Maxima SE has 121,000 miles on today. I've sprayed TB cleaner in the throtlle many of times. I plan on taking apart the TB and IACV this Staurday so I picked up both gaskets today.

When I have the TB and IACV disconnected should I spray TB cleaner or pour liquid Sea Foam into the engine?

Which way do you turn the black Idle screw to tighten the valve and reduce the idle, clockwise or counter-clockerwise?

you should NOT just be spraying TB cleaner into the intake. that gets sucked into the IM and accumulates there.

you should REMOVE the tb and iacv and clean them once they are off. make sure to clean both sides of the butterfly plate.

theres actually nothing to mess up. Just take out the 3 bolts and use a new gasket. U cant mess up the plugs either because they are all color coordinated .

probably but everytime i fix something i always break something else! i was a honda guy and recently made the smart move to my max in sept 07 but barely started working on it myself the last two months.

i was in the same boat as you in oct 07. total noob.

i had ZERO experience with any kind of car

at this point i can safely say that cleaning the IACV is one of the easiest things you can do. trust me.

You're saying TB cleaner is not made to spray into the TB but only the surface of the TB?

The reason I am taking off both the TB and IACV is to clean them manually. Those aren't the only 2 parts on the engine that needs cleaning so I'm pouring liquid sea foam into the engine when they are disconnected.

I'll find out which direction closes/ opens the valve when I have the IACV disconnected.

IACV gasket is 23785-AD100

TB gasket is 16175-31UO1


I found that turning the idle screw clockwise will tighten the valve and vice versa.

Tomorrow I'm taking apart the TB, IACV, PCV valve, EGR and a few other parts to give it a good cleaning.

after about 10 months your pictures and instruction of the iacv and tb cleaning were posted are still showing us people not to spend too much money when it can be fixed with few bucks and also save time by not going to the shop.

just did both the throttle body and IACV . My IACV was very dirty just like the one on the pictures . easy job , dindt notice any improvement but at least i know its clean .

here are some recent pics that show the actual insides of the valve.
the last time i cleaned the IACV i never bothered removing that gold cap (fear of stripping a screw) - but this time i did and there was a pretty large deposit of debris.














and then the mounting point (looking at the inside of the EGR mount)

Good pics. Did you remove the pink and purple connector parts too? Is that an o-ring where the brown connector part was? If it is, did you replace it? Was there any difference?

I removed mine before but I didn't take any of the connector parts apart. There was no difference.

naw i left the pink and purple plugs alone

and im not 100% sure onw hat you mean by brown connector oring, but the answer is no, there is no oring there.


as far as difference goes, i cleaned it as recently as january, so what you see here is only about 8 months of wear/
