DIY Odometer Repair
DIY Odometer Repair
In case anyone is looking for a Do It Yourself option for repairing a broken odometer....
As has happened to many other 4th gens, my odometer & trip odo stopped working. The spedometer still worked.
Searching this forum revealed that the typical fix was to replace the instrumnet cluster with either a new or used one. I wanted to see if something less expensive than a new one (about $200 from what I read) was possible, and didn't like the idea of a used one with a different milage reading (plus, no telling how long a used one would last). So I decided to rip mine apart and see if anything could be done.
Well, somewhat to my suprise, it appears that I have fixed it.
Inside the spedo/odo unit is a little electric motor and gearset which drives both the main & trip odometers. I was evenutally able to remove it and take it apart. Don't know exactly what stopped it from working - there was nothing obviously broken. Maybe the gear grease had dried up a bit, maybe there was a bit of dirt in the motor. Anyway, a minor cleaning and a couple dabs of white lithium grease on the gears (I have no idea what the original grease was), and its now working. Only about 200 miles so far - time will tell.
Also, the repair did not change my odometer reading.
