loss of 1st and 2nd gears

I been searching and asking around but the only thread that came up was a thread back in 2005 from the 3rd gen forum.

Heres my problem, about a 1-2 months ago my input shaft was going, it would make a (rur rur rur) noise when the clutch pedal was depressed. I was told by a .org member that my input shaft was on its last legs. But i continued to drive it, but one night i was on my way home from work and i was coming to a stop at a light, i went to put the car in 1st gear, and i wouldnt even go in, so tried 2nd gear........nope. Then i put it in 3rd, it went in perfect, so i drove it home like that for about 2 blocks till i got home, i parked it and still wouldnt go in 1st or 2nd, put it went it 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse fine.

so im trying to figure out why, i believe the input shaft bearing is the cause of all this, but i just want to verify that its that. and before i take it shops and they try to charge me for something i dont need done.

1 other thing, i all ways kept up with the gear oil change, with reline mt GL-4 75w90

if it's making noise when the clutch pedal is depressed, it is not your input shaft bearing. your input shaft bearing doesn't spin when your clutch pedal is depressed.

does your shifter move over to between 1st and 2nd and you are just unable to move it up or down, or can you not even move it over to the left between 1st and 2nd?

depressed means the same thing as pressed so that's what was confusing me. so when it's NOT pressed it makes noise? in that case then your input shaft bearing is bad.

your problems getting in to 1st or 2nd could be related or they might not be. there are a number of things that could cause that. regardless, you need a rebuild or another working trans for each issue to be resolved.

On a related note, im having a kinda similar problem maybe you guys can help. When i press my clutch and go to put it into 1st or 2nd from a coast i get this rushing air noise. Almost similar to a blow off valve. Very hard to explain but i know its not normal, maybe its more of a winding noise im not really sure. It's rarely notchy but at times i notice it makes the noise only when the shifter is notchy. Any ideas?

Dont mean to jack the thread btw.

If you are moving at more than a creep, you might be hearing a shaft spinning up as a syncronizer does its job. I'd say it is pretty normal if it is subtle. If it is loud something may be going bad. The MT experts here will surely give you a better answer.
