Rewiring Headlights with relays

First thread ....

So i stayed up till 4 last night wiring in some new 12 ga wire and relays. And now i have nothing when i hit my lights. d; ) Anyway, i connected the battery side stock wiring to the relays for high and low beam. Then i ran the power to both headlights from the battery side.

The passenger side wiring is unconnected. Do i need to run my passenger factory ground, low, and high wires from the passenger side to meet the battery factory ground, low, and high on the battery side?????

Or can i just leave the passenger side harness unconnected? That would mean my problem lies elsewhere.

I know that my connections are great since new grounds coming from the headlight bulbs can be grounded anywhere on the body as long as it is a good metal on metal connection... correct?

Yeah im getting a headache... from all this fun.

You can leave the passenger side alone.

You probably don't want to use anywhere on the BODY as ground, but I assume you mean frame, etc. You should probably be running the actual ground for the headlights straight to the battery negative terminal.

Just curious, why did you choose to do this? Your car already uses relays.

see if thats how you have it..
ALSO* make sure you have the correct type of relay some of them provide power through both 87 & 87a and some only thogh 87 and when the singnal it given switched to 87a.

I can provide you with some more insight once i get out of work. contact me if you cant get it to work..

spread it out on the floor and take a step back and look at it and see if eveythign is goign tot eh rite place. and that ground is being supplied to relays.
& CHECK your fuse next to teh battery.

Also please run a inline fuse to prevent and hazardous conditions to yourself of your ride. (i belive $2 at pepboys)

On a relay,

87 - power out
85 - signal in ( from old wiring)
30- power in
86 - ground in (from old wiring)

Is that correct?

Also i have no 87a pin. Is that a problem here?

I fixed it!!! I fixed it!!! yea i feel like a dumb assss right now though... I had everything connected properly. But until i sat there for an hour or two did i realize that i HAD to complete the circuit with the passenger side ground, high, and low signal wires. So i just ran them to the other set near the battery. And then i hooked that biatch up.
I can't believe the simplicity of wiring and how difficult i made it.

Here's the quote that made me realize that....

"On these systems, it's imperative to use both negative and positive existing headlamp wires to trigger the relays. It is tempting to run the existing headlamp feed wire to relay terminal 86 (trigger feed) and simply find a convenient ground for relay terminal 85 (trigger ground). However, this will not work with ground-switched systems. Run the vehicle's existing feed wire to terminal 86, and run the vehicle's existing ground wire to terminal85."

Hopefully that made sense. Thanks for the help.

Oh i guess i forgot to say why i was putting in these relays. I have r34 style lights and i am going to use them w/halogen. And since our factory light system is set up to run a 9004 bulb, I had to do this.

At first I wired in a diode only. That sent weak power to the bulbs. When i would hit my highs, the lows would dim dramatically to where it looked as if i was running 10 yr old bulbs. YIKES!!!

If anyone is going to keep their r34 lights w/halogen..... then I recomend using upgraded wiring, diode, and relays.

I also switch the 9005 bulb for the 9006 bulb. The 10 watt difference in those bulbs really did make a big difference in the light output. Better side intensity and better cutoff "look" (i know they glare a little, but i aimed them to cross. Kinda like a slight X pattern)
