Engine "Gunk." Can it be used on a driveway?

It's my forum- I'll do what I want. That means that I can ask dumb questions.

If I use engine "Gunk" (or other degreaser) to clean my engine and the overspray and wash-off drop onto my driveway, will it harm the topcoat of my driveway?

Not a smart idea...

Also, I've done it before on asphalt with no issues, but that driveway was already all torn up so I didn't exactly check to make sure no traces remained.

i don't think it the issue of a topcoat that you should be worried about as much as polluting the water in your city, depending on where you live, like here in MA, a guy I know got a $5,000 ticket for spilling some oil on the driveway, he was told it "might have made it into the drain" which would be pollution. Anyways, unless you live in an area where they are not so ****. just go to a car wash.

can't use it on asphalt because it will eat away at the tar. You could use it on cement but it will most likely leave wet looking spots. if i were you get some super clean, its biodegradable and i have never had problems with it leaving stains after hosing the area down a bit.

*edit: and from my experience it is asphalt safe

I have done this many times before, basically the better the product (more $) the stronger the concentration is, and more stains it will leave on the drive way

BUT the stains will/should go away with time and rain or you can hose it down every couple of days and it will come off, or you can throw some CLR (de-greaser) on it and the acid will eat the stain away (maybe along with the ?top caot? you have? )

best thing to do is to get a really long hose and wash the engine bay on the actual street in front of the house, not the driveway

hope this helps...

Asphault.

I am worried that the crap that eats sludge (mostly oil) will eat the petroleum in the topcoat.

Car is not moving. I have the water pump removed. I want to clean the engine a bit while I have the pulleys and belt removed.

WD40 picks most stuff off. Spray it...let it set, and then wipe off with rag.

Now if your concrete is sealed properly, you shouldn't have a problem.
