it all started with a little grinding when shifting into 3rd, now its progressed to leaking and slipping gears..

any suggestions on what i should do??

replace, rebuild, upgrade to a racing tranny of somekind??? whats out there im new to the maxima?

Assuming this is a 5MT, start with finding where the leak is coming from, seems like the first step. If it's axle seals, you may have bad diff bearings, though those are relatively easy to diagnose from under the car.

Replace the clutch, fix the leak is what I would do. Of course, that's just fixing the problems you have...not a very intuitive thing to do, I know.

 

Any experience with working on cars/trannys? If not, let the pros deal with it. They'll tell you if it's cheaper to rebuild it or to replace it with a refurbished one.

No need for a upgraded 'racing' tranny if your NA.

 

If it's a manual, you could have trouble getting it rebuilt well. Make sure they remeasure and re-shim the tranny before calling it done. (most shops just ignore that step).

Impossible to say about cost, and I'm not going to suggest buying used is a whole lot better since used trannys tend to be hard to find and often need rebuilt anyway.

If it's not leaking from the CV shafts, it is possible that it is the IPS bearing and it's so bad now it's leaking. I don't know for sure if that would cause a grind into 3rd or not ... but I see how it could.

side note: if you want to do a "racing" tranny, do a 6spd swap or do a rebuild with an Altima (5spd) 3rd gear
