Should I get a VLSD or a low mileage open?

That's the question. I found a VLSD for $950.00 shipped with 122k miles, and a open diff. for $650.00 shipped with 65k. What should I do?

Pics for why I'm getting a new tranny:

why are junkyards so god damn expensive. I'm going to find out how much a brand new lsd is from nissan with a discount. I bet its right above 1k...****in rediculous the prices i see from these junkyards on car-part.com for trannies with 100k+ on them.

I'd go vlsd, unless you won't need it. If you go open now and decide later you want an lsd, it'll cost a heck of a lot more than 300...

just my 2 cents

does it snow where you live? i got my vlsd out of an 01 AE and i love it. i got it for about the same price but it included several other 5spd swap parts.

i have heard though that the vlsd do wear out over time and do not work as well as the other lsd units (like the quaife). $300 is a pretty handsome price difference. i think if i were in your situation, get the open.
unless you can afford to be patient and wait for a better deal on a vlsd, because i've definitely seen them at better prices or at least w/ lower mileage.

Depends on your application. Ask yourself, "do I really need LSD?" Based on price and mileage I'd go with teh open for $650.

And damn... Maxima trannies are f'n expensive. I picked up a spare tranny for my MR2 for $20, and it came with a bunch of engine parts/sensors.

Okay...how about a 2k2 6-spd w/conversion parts, 100k on the tranny, and $950?

yeah did you check car-part.com? It looks like there'd be a few cheaper options there.

I checked car-part.com, and there are cheaper open ones but with much higher mileage. My car only has 86k, so I don't want to put a tranny it it that has 120k+ to save a few bucks. As far as vlsd, I don't trust the Maxima/locking ones, so I just looked at I30 ones.

^ There's your answer. I would never install (or pay for) a 4th gen tranny without inspecting it first. I've rebuilt trannys in bad shape with 62k, and I've seen a few in good shape with 120k. No way to know without having the right set of eyes on it.

wait..wahts the difference between the vlsd and the lsd..

KRRZ350- my tranny is making a really distinct whining noise with acceleration that is noticeable in first and 2nd even third gear. you know what causes this?

More than likely Dif bearings, confirm by pulling drivers side axle out and attempting to wiggle the differential up & down.

voted for open here if you can't access the insides to see what kind of shape the tranny is in!
