Auto Climate Control Blower Motor Malfunctioning

First time poster, so bear with me....

I have a 99 Maxima SE-L with the Automatic Climate Control System. The system seems to be functioning correctly with regards to temperature and vent controls, but the blower motor is on continuously at the highest speed, regardless of whether or not the Climate Control is on or off. When you turn the ignition key, the blower comes on full blast and it does not stop until you turn the key and remove it. Adjusting the manual fan control on the Climate Control System doesn't seem to do anything except change the displayed blower speed setting.

I have the FSM and have run through the diagnostics of the control unit and the only error code displayed was an error 25 (indicating a faulty Sunlight detector). The car was outside, but not in direct sunlight (which I understand could lead to a faulty indication for this sensor), so I don't really think the sensor is causing the problem (but have not retested yet).

In searching the Forums, I have noticed a large amount of posts from people with the manual climate control system burning out the resistor packs on the blower motor circuit. Is that a possibility with the automatic system? If not, any ideas what to test next?

I'm getting a bit frustrated with the car as I was just preparing to put a new power antenna (died last month) in it when this blower motor problem started. A few weeks ago, the car lost the security key information and needed to be towed to the dealer to be re-programmed. Sorry to whine, the car drives great and I wouldn't trade the engine for just about anything else available, I just want some trouble-free drive time, it's only 2.5 years old.

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

The Sunlight detector is located on the top right of the dash board. I always notice that as soon as my car hits the bright sunlight, the fan will kick on an extra notch or two. If the sunlight detector is faulty, it could be sending the signal to your climate control that would make the fan kick on full blast all the time. Since your car is a 99, it is still under warranty (provided you have less than 36K miles on the car). I personally would take it to the dealer and they will replace the sunlight sensor for free under warranty.

I think thats right on the money!!!! Replace that sensor or go back to the dealer to have this done. You should still be under warranty.

Thanks for your replies, but my car has 41K on it and is no longer under warranty so the dealer is not an option. But, I have found the problem.

I spent a good deal of time studying the FSM last night and found some information that when the in-vehicle temp and the ambient temp are very close, the sunlight detector only provides a swing of 1 volt to the blower motor. My fan was on full blast so I decided to look elsewhere.

The microprocessor controlling the system would need something to convert it's output signal (for desired fan setting) to a higher current. That unit is referenced in the FSM as the Fan Control Amp.

After calling several dealers and spending mucho time on the phone, the part was identified under a different name (Nissan Part #27761-70T03). My local dealer had one in stock for $116.00. I checked the web and found it for $86 online but wanted to get this thing done so I went local. In speaking with the Parts Clerk, he told me they keep one in stock because they do go bad.

Replacement of the unit took all of 20 minutes. The part is easily accessible after removal of the glove box assembly and a philips screwdriver was all that was needed.

Problem fixed. Thanks for all the advice.
