Dependability/modability @ high mileage?

I'm looking to get a hold of a 4th gen Max, but with my budget (MAYBE a little over 6500), I can't find many <100k miles. Does anyone know if I'd be wasting time modding out a 4th gen w/ over 100k miles? Should I bump down to a 3rd gen w/ less than 100k miles?

Thanks for helping out the uninformed.

$6500 does limit you a bit, but there are several people on this forum that have modded their cars w/ over 100k miles. A few in fact have just recently added superchargers or NOS. The car is very dependable if taken care of. The minor problems can usually be fixed by reading this site.
ALso, if you are after performance you'll probably want to get a 5spd. Typical probs w/ the 4th gens are starters (easy fix), oxygen sensors (easy fix), and a few other little things. OTHERWISE THEY'RE GREAT CARS. My 95 $E has 121,000 miles on it.
Whatever you do - don't get a 3rd gen.

3rd gens are pretty damn tite, they have build quality that totally kicks the 4th and 5th gen's asses, they are real quality automobiles... the 4th gen loses alot of that for more performance

and the VQ engine in the 4th gen can easily last 200K miles if properly maintained

I have 155,000 on my '95 and look in my sig for all I've done to it. You can buy my car with the degadged rear, fresh tint, 6 color indiglos, and the dual cat-back for $6500. It is never too late to mod them. I've actually gotten better gas mileage with the intake, y pipe, cat, and cat-back than I did before. I was in the low 30's when I had it all on there. I just want something faster. My car is a GLE also.
