About to buy 4th gen need opinions!!!

I'm about to purchase this 95 max SE 5-spd with leather and everything. Its got 124500 KMS (not miles) which is about 75600 miles. Car is in pretty good shape although this guy doesnt have any service records and seems like he was lazy in taking care of it (no rust proofing ... a must here in toronto). A couple of scratches and dings (minor) and needs rust proofing (could see rust at beginning stages on exhaust and chassis in the front) no rust on body tho. Maybe needs a tune up and new brake pads. And also back speakers blown and part of plasting housing for driver side view mirror is broken.
Seller was asking $13500 Canadian (not US) and I offered $11500 (which is around US $7670) and he seems like he'll sell for a couple hundred more. I'm taking the car to my mechanic tomorrow to have it inspected and get his opinion.
If everythings cool do u think this car is worth this money?? I plan to close at $11500. Tell me wut u guys think.
Thanx

The blue book value of that car according to Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com) is $7,400 US. If it has a few extra things wrong with it as you describe, anything more then the blue book value isn't a good deal. Why don't you print out the listing of the blue book value and take it back to the seller for more help in getting the price you want to pay for that vehicle.

I checked kbb.com and it said for canadian cars use zip code closest to ur province so I used Detroit Michigan and I got $7200 US for fair and $8000 for good condition and $8600 for excellent.
As far as I can tell the car falls in the "good" category deduct a couple hundred bucks.
Thanx for the response I'll go get the car checked out in a couple of hours and I'll keep you guys posted. Meanwhile what everyone else think?? keep em comin.

75,000 Miles is low. I have a majestic blue 95SE, 5sp, loaded with 124,500 MILES. I'd pay $7,500 for mine. That SE is just getting warmed up. Go For It...

Update

Ok I met with the seller today and took the car to my mechanic. The mechanic looked at the car and said everythings good. But the problem is that the seller is stuck at $12100 Canadian which is about US $8066 and wont come down. Plus he wants me to get the car certified (inspection passed) myself. I fcuked up and kinda agreed to that but then I told him nothings final yet I'll call you and let you kno. The mechanic says that price should be a lil lower because its a 5spd and resale value is not the same as auto. What should I do 12 g's is alot of money!! ....

come on guys speak out wut u think of this deal.

From the way you describe it, the car's in so-so condition. Lazy owner. 4 months ago I payed $10,000 US for my '95 SE Auto loaded w/ everything except leather, only 53k miles, and superblack. (Talk about barely broken in ) Also the resale value has come down. And it's a manual. I personally wouldn't buy it for that much mula. TRY and talk him down a little more.

Now, if that car is in GOOD shape, I'd take it.

come on guys speak out wut u think of this deal.

Let's take a look:
- He was at $13,500. You initially offered $11,500. He's now at $12,100. Offer to split the difference between your $11,500 and his $12,100 at $11,800. You get the car for $300 more than your initial offer. He has come down $1,700. Not bad...

For the rest:
- 75600 miles = 10,800 miles/year. That is extremely low in my book.
- No service records. Is this really indicative of the guy hiding something or just being a cra&&y record keeper?
- He was lazy in taking care of the car because it doesn't have rustproofing? Is this really indicative of the guy being lazy with the car in the timeframe since, because he didn't buy rust proofing 7 years ago?
- A couple of scratches and dings - join the club. They're called (expletive deleted) ignoramuses with shopping carts
- Blown speakers and busted mirror. Those are problems. Use these in the negs to get him down to $11,800.

Then, if you trust your mechanic's opinion that it is in good shape, buy it! In comparison, that's basically $6500 USD and a steal!

Keep looking, that aint worth what he's asking

Sounds too expensive for the condition it is in. Run.

If you can spend what you say you can, then check the new-car dealer lots for a trade-in 4thGen - used car trade-in values are plummetting due to the low/no interest rate deals going on these days.

Dealers keep the nice ones to re-sell, auction off the crappers.

You can definately wheel/deal on one.

BTW, missing rustproofing is no big deal; Consumer Reports has been telling us for years to NOT spend the extra on rustproofing, so this owner may have followed the advice.

But the missing records - what's up with that?? What's it take to save receipts in an 8.5x11 envelope for cryin out loud? Go elsewhere.

I got a killer deal on my car by taking the money from the sale of the previous one ans cashing it in 20 dollar notes then puitting it in a suitcase and opening it when the seller was there. you say there is (enter value here) even if there is more. they will be so distracted by the sight of the money they buckle.

lol are u serious u were walkin round wit a briefcase full of money hehheh. Well anyways I called him up and said look man I just realized that the resale value of a stick is less than an auto and plus I gotta replace the rear speakers and the side view mirrow which dealer says is $360 so my final offer is $11800 canadian. He said forget it I kno the value of my car and I'll trade it in. I'm like fine if u change ur mind u kno my number. I might call next week and see if hes desperate.
In the mean time its back to searchin for my max.
Thanx for ur help everyone.

same thing

I did the same thing with my friend when he was buying a car as the suitcase idea. I went with him for negotiations of price and he needed a ride down there. He was buying his CRX and it was in the ads for like $4,200. I got him down to like $3,500 and my friend had it on him but I was telling the guy he could only give him like 3K. The guy was like hesitant on it like I figured he would be so ahead of time I told him when I offered the guy 3K just take out the bills and start counting them. As I was negotiating they guy looks over and see's my friend tallying up the $50 dollar bills ( fifties were used because it looks better for our plan) which was a big stack of them and he is like "Oh you have it right now?" we told him we wanted to buy right then he went in his house for about 1 minute came back out saying let go for it. So if you have the money ready to go then you could end up driving him down a bit.
