Leaking rack and opinon steering is......

My, Rack and opinon is leaking minorly and there is a strong viberation feeling on my steering wheel. I know that I had a CV joint problem and I wll take care of that soon. I Just recently flushed the power steering with a refill (Turkey bastard) method. I also just caught the problem from being worse. The question is what can happen if the leaking get severe. I know, that I will not have any power or control of the steering but what about the viberation, where could that be coming from. I am asumming that the balljoints can cause the viberation and so can the tierod ends. Help... Thanks.

You need to change that rack. Just a good junkyard rack is fine; but it will take several hours to get the job done.

Your rack is leaking..silicone? Damn cheap chinese made implants just playin hehe

Anyhow, yes i would replace the rack. Although i have heard about people trying Auto-RX in the PS and it slowed and stoped a leak. Although i would not agree that is the proper way, if you just need a quick fix that may be a possibility. The rack is a PITA to do with the engine/tranny in.

I did one on a 97, and i had to pull both axles, cross member, rear and front motor mounts, intake tract, y-pipe, etc. I probbaly took off more then i needed but it also made it easier to access.

I am going to keep an eye on that area, closley.I just cleaned it and I will try to check for minor leaks but, it should not leak as I tryed tightning up the bolts. If I were to change It I would take out the axles and the rear mount and the y-pipe. I know that when you try to put your hand in the engine bay it won't fit because, it's to cramped.

as well...

My power steering started to leak last weekend (square foot puddle in less than 2 hours). I was worried about the pump running dry on my long commutes so I cut the Power steering belt off as I had another on hand in case. I think the leak is coming from the Rack and pinion unit. Is it worth having Pepboys replace it for $230.00 plus $251.00 for the unit (including the $160.00 core). I usually do all my own repair.

I just noticed my car leaking slightly in the last couple of weeks. I went under and couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from. Took it to the shop today to find out that the rack and pinion is what's leaking not to mention the two struts that need to be replaced, which I already knew. The damage is $1000 for parts and labor. I couldn't leave my car there as it would take some time for the job to be completed, but it seems like I'm not the only one with this problem.

Do you need the to front struts or rears,If it's the front I would replace them asap, depending on how bad they are and they can have a bad effect on the racks, that's if your car is bouncing like a basketball or it's sitting down low nearly touching the ground making it hard to turn and your rack and opinon is under extreme pressure to turn the wheel. I would monitor the leak by wiping of that area with some brake cleaner and a rag, than put some kind of paper board under the rack and see if it leaks, on it and how bad.

It is the front struts, but it's not very low to the ground or bouncing.
