Projector dimensions- what do you think?

I am hopefully going to be ordering a full projector retro kit after christmas and doing the retro on a pair of 97-99 headlights, i have a question though, the projectors im looking at are from the infiniti FX and have a lens diameter of only 2.5 inches. For those of you with retrofits, what lense size are you using? will a 2.5" lense look to small?

It is not too small at all. You just have to make sure that the rest of the projector fits in the housing. I just finished my retrofit with the TSX projectors and those are about 2.5" in diameter.

I have my old set of retrofits that I'm thinking of selling. 99 headlights, AE'd with M3 bi-xenon projectors.

The lens has nothing to do with the height and depth of the projector.

agreed, but when you are looking at the car from the front all you really see is the lens and bezel. I was just wondering if it would look too small in comparison to the headlight housing. The dimension of the projector assembly is not really an issue as the headlight housing can essentially be modified to fit any dimension projector. Just wanted some cosmetic (rice) advice thats all

do so research...a lot of people go with tsx which are very nice and they are 2" lens. They all look somewhat small because it's a single projector in the big housing. It's all about shrouds IMO.

thanks for the pics matt, thats exactly what i was looking for, i was having trouble finding info because a lot of the older threads were missing their picture links so i couldnt get a good look at any ones with a 2.5". Im pumped to order the kit and start the retro. While i have everyone's attention do you black out the reflectors with gloss or flat black paint?

nice work man. So much for me thinking I was doing a new retro ha. My r34 retro is only going to be two bi-xenon and two h7 halogens. Very illegal running 4 hids. No trouble with cops with those and the blue eyes too?

yeah i dont like the fitting. there was a big gap near the corner portion of the lights. i used piping insulation to fill it in termporarily, but i am going to try to find something better soon. but yes you are right, they do not fit very well.

Dayumn. I have to say I'm not at all feeling the angel eyes, but that's awesome. First for a maxima I think.

Are the projectors aimed correctly? In this pic,

it looks as if the outer projector is aimed downward or is that just the shroud?
Any pics of the cutoffs on a wall?
Cool setup though, minus those angel eyes. I see you also used some CF in the housings.

Cefiro Headlights: $200
Carbon Fiber: $50
25 hour Retrofit: $500

Seeing those things in a max. Priceless.

Well, just close to 1K, but still...nice!

(oh, and I have really no idea how much each thing cost, I just guessed....)

Try $800+ for all the projectors/ballasts/bulbs/wiring.

Dude...it was just an expression, no need to correct me. Hence what I said in small print.

Ugh, back on topic. When I looked at the Fx35 retros a second time, I actually like the size of them better than say a 3". It looks like is belongs there, not too big, but just enough to not be swallowed. Go with it, and keep us updated.

i dont have any pics of the cutoff, but the kit was only 700 shipped, angel eyes were 70, carbon fiber was 60, and other materials of course. the outside projectors arent aimed downward, it is just the shroud. i can say that the beam pattern is very nice. the low beams have a distinct cutoff, and when i hit the highs, i can see forever.

i agree, the housings i used were not the best fitting, but i am pleased with the results. i was a first time retrofitter, so i couldnt ask for much more. if i were to do the project over, i would definitely consider using OEM headlights even though it may be a tighter fit.
another tip: if you are planning on using the cefiro housings for a retrofit, be prepared to lose aiming functionality. the housings use the chrome reflector as the aiming function, and it is impossible to mount the projector on the reflector itself, so it had to be removed completely.
also, i am thinking about putting the angel eyes on a switch so that i can choose when I want them on, bc as of right now, they are wired through the parking lamps and im SOL if a cop pulls up next to me or something at a red light. i know some of you despise the angel eyes on maximas, or on any car, but i am a fan of flashy lights

i do know that when i hit high beams i do not get the distinct cutoff, of course, bc of the way my wiring harness uses the factory plugs. when i turn on the high beams, the inside projectors switch to high beams, but the outside set of projectors simply turn on, and are automatically low beam. therefore on high beam i have two cutoff patterns. while on low beam, i am able to see the cutoff line i see in many pictures that people have posted, so i am pretty sure i did a decent job of aiming the projectors when i installed them. if i ever have any problems with the adjustment, i can simply loosen the screws that fasten down the projectors and adjust them accordingly. i kno its not the best way to aim them, but it would work. thanks for all your compliments and questions. if anyone needs to ask anything, i'll be happy to help.
