I was bored today so I decided to make a shift boot.
This is just a practice one I made out of an old shirt. I'll make another one out of leather soon.

LoL, well I was just sitting at home with nothing to do and then I saw that old shirt laying around.

 

I made it all by hand btw. Not on a sewing machine.

 

hahah yeah the old shirt thing is funny. Looks almost like suede though lol. I remember cutting up the front end mask from when I owned a Galant, and used the material for the center arm rest in an MR2 I used to own lol. Kinda hurt since that mask cost me like $100+ at the dealer back in '01 when I got the car new, but I couldn't off that mask for $20 so I decided to make use of it.

Stitching looks good, should look awesome w/ the right material.

 

hmm...ive never seen an auto with a shift boot...just make sure you remember where the gears are, lol

It's not hard to know which position does what. Especially with the little guard things.

Push button in, move lever from park, release button, slap all the way down and it stops in D. One down is 2, 2 down is 1. Slap the lever all the way up and it stops in N. I could go on and on.....

 

Yeah, I pretty much got it memorized. I never look at it when I shift.

You need to Ebay those HAHA it looks good though especially that you did it by hand post some pics when you make the leather one

 

Not a new idea, but props for doing it all by hand. My only recommendation: change the shift ****. Looks like a crappy Pontiac with the stock shifter

Well looks like you did a good job, now get some suede or other nice leather and go for it.

Yeah that shirt made me laugh a little, but definently nice anyways. Looks like its done professionally. **** you should make me one with black leather and a bright green stiching, i could pay you.

 

I don't care what or where it came from. It looks real good. Honestly better than the crap you see at Autozone. You should give it a try with black suede or leather.

This is about how low it should be when I cut the shifter to make it a short shifter.

aaaaah, that's MUCH nicer. knowing what gear your in is good stuff. I didn't have mine for a while and kept trying to drive in neutral. doesn't work too well.

 

oh, and i second what was said earlier. make em, ebay em. especially now since it doesn't detract from the usability of the car, it's a nice lil addition.

 

Yeah you can make a nice little side change from it, don't even have to send them to ebay, you can use the for sale forums here and since you already have a small rep over here from showing your work you might get a good number of sellers. Like i said, if your willing to make a black and green one for a manual and a ebrake boot i will definently buy.

Not seeing the PRND display in no way detracts from the "usability" of the car. I've had my car without one for nearly 2 years now. If you have to look down and stare at your display every time you move the ****, I'd hate to see what the rest of your driving ability is like.

On another note, and not to contradict what I just said, I think I may put my PRND display back in now that I've seen that. I'm tired of people asking me if my car is a manual and telling me I'm pretending it's something it's not. Olezkha, is there any particular way you situated things to accomplish that? It's been so long I forget how everything fits together in there.

k, I'm done with my shifter. Here's how it looks.

 

what did you do with the o/d button, and how do you shift? is it one of those push down methods?

 

It's a push down. I just cut the wires for the o/d, I never use it anyway. I guess I can make a button for it

 

Yes, they are push-down.


For the record, that looks AWESOME. I'm converting mine to that (same exact thing as you, even the ****, just minus the display). Can you answer my previous question, pretty please?

The only reason I wanted to keep the prnd display is for resale. An average person would not want to have a boot covering that display. Although now I think that it looks really good. It looks stock, but fancy.

K, so to keep it from going onto the prnd display I sewed a piece of an old hanger into the bottom of the boot. you need to cut out a piece that's 13cm long.

Having the display certainly helps with resale to non-maxima or non-modding people. Has a very M35/45 look to it.
