To loose the knock sensor nut

I put the socket on the KS nut but was not able to find an effective way to put the racket in to loosen the nut. Of course I search and read almost all of the links.

Any tips would be appreciated.

thanks

I used a universal joint and extension bar to remove and install the KS bolt. It has been a couple of years since I done it, so I don't remember the length of the extension bar; try different lengths to see which will work. It will take a bit of work.

I use a Craftsman 12mm combination wrench. Place the closed end on the bolt; the wrench is short enough that it will stay there and not fall off. Then use a long prybar with the point down in the intake valley to put leverage against the open end of the wrench. Prying toward the rear of the car to loosen will normally break the bolt loose. A couple more turns with the wrench, then you can get in there and remove the rest of the bolt by hand. Reverse these instructions to tighten. A gentle nudge with the prybar to tighten is sufficient.

How long is the wrench that you used?

Thanks

I used a combo wrench too. A trick you might try (depends on the nut's orientation) is put the box side on the nut and then use a 13 or 14mm wrench to 'extend' the 12mm by jamming the box side of the larger wrench on the open side of the 12mm.

Previously I was planning to sell this car (1996 I30t, 5spd) since I already have another big 4 doors in an LS400. I bought the KS and tried to fix it before handing the car to a buyer. Only recently I took the I30t out to drive when it snows. I30t runs so well that it is still smooth and no vibration at 100 mph. I will keep this car for a long long time.

I put on the socket and U-Joint on the bolt first... and "aimed" the end of the u-joint socket facing out the "valley" ( facing out).. then, with the 12" socket extender arm, I manage to stick it/connect it to the u-joint..

from there on, attach the "ratchet" on the end of the extension arm and unscrew away.. what I did was use my left hand to keep the extension arm properly alligned and right hand to unscrew.. hope that helps...

This is how it's done, .org style.

This is the fast way, also known as the big hands way.

Worked for me.

In order to do it correctly (i.e. torque the KS down using a torque wrench) the IM must come off. I’ve done it the easy way and the semi – easy way, it’s not that big of a difference. In the end, you know that your KS is torqued down properly, an item where proper torque is worth noting.
