Buying new tires?? They aint cheap but here's a start...

For all of you that are looking to buy new tires soon, I’ve been doing some research for my new tires from TireRack.com, Road &Track reviews, Consumer Report sites, W.O.M from my friends etc. and have composed a list to get you at least started on the right foot. I ranked them in order from GOOD to the BEST and taking into consideration, in order, performance, ride quality, price and then *my opinion*. This is quite arguable, but it’s just something to get you started in the right direction

Good: Pirelli P7000 Supersport
Real Good: Pirrelli PZero Rosso
Better: Yokaham AVS
Even Better: Yokahama Parada
Best: Bridgestone Potenza S-02
Best’est of the Best: Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position

Feel free to post anymore that I missed.

S-O2 is discontinued --

But the S-O3 is amazing -- I have a set on my car --
There is no comparison to the AVS Yokahamas --

The S-O3s have great traction while being far more comfortable than the Yokahama AVS or Parada -- I used to have Yokahamas on my car and I really didn't like the ride. I've rode in a BMW M3 with AVS Yokahamas and they really don't ride very well even with stock BMW suspension.

Remember that Bridgestone has a big presence in Formula 1 racing.
Their technology will transfer to their top end street tires.

You just can't go wrong with the S-O3s. And you don't have to crank up their inflation pressures anywhere near maximum for street driving. 35PSI out of a maximum of 51PSI is just fine for street driving. Maybe 40PSI for autocrossing.

Yes, those are good tires, but that's not all the choices out there. You need to keep in consideration price as well. For example, the S-03 Pole Positions are great, but they are also mad expensive.

For a Maxima, I'm not even sure the chassis is up to fully realizing the grip of the S-03's.

Two ultra high performance tires that rank high in my book are the Bridgestone RE730 and Kumho 712. They are reasonably priced, and should be more than enough for a modded Maxima.

The P7000SS are fine, but there are other good all season ultra hipo tires out there, mainly the excellent Dunlop SP5000.

RE950s and Dunlop Sport A2

Tirerack.com has the Bridgestone RE950 and Dunlop Sport A2's rated as the #1 and #2 Hi-po all season radials. Other tests seem to confirm this choice.

FWIW, here in Pittsburgh, NTB and Firestone dealers will match the Tirerack prices. NTB also has an extra 5% discount for AAA members, and an extra 7% off for Bayer employees. Firestone dealers - unknown.

Just got my RE950's from NTB, now time to see if they meet the hype.

yes they are, but there are tons still out there from retailers on sale and are *almost* as good as the SO-3's.

I know the best tires out there are expensive, but c'mon man....it's YOUR maxima!

I love the RE950s... they significantly improved the handling and grip of my brother's car, and I will get them when the tires on my car run out.

I had a set of Dunlop D60A2s. They handle great and are queit on the highway. I higly recommend them. They have recently been replaced by the SP Sport A2 which I hear is even better.

Discontinued a while ago though. So if you need just one - blow out worn out whatever- you might not be able to in the future. Thats the only part that stopped me from getting them. Maybe even worth it to ya to pick up an extra one unmounted just to keep around in case.

If you're on a budget buy Kumho Ecsta 712's. They're not the best but they're the best value for the price you pay ($75, maybe less per tire)...
