airbag light blinking, please help
airbag light blinking, please help
I have a 99se and my airbag light is blinking. I was wondering if there was any diagnostics I could do to find the problem? Also, I was doing the CC always on mod and got confused cause the picture and directions on vqpower are different (i'm assuming they are for 95-96) but then the other thread in the stickies said the actual terminal numbers to jump (3 and 5) so I did that. Went for a test drive to see if it worked and low and behold the light was always on, but cruise didn't work. Then I was like dang it, and then noticed the air bag light was flashing, awesome right? Reading more into the thread I see someone else had the problem too (cc light on, but no functionality), and someone told them to jump 3+5 and 6+7 and it should work. It got dark so I didn't get to try that, now I'm just pissed about the airbag light. I don't think the ASCD relay is related to the airbag system, so I'm thinking the mistake wasn't related to the new flashing light, only coincidence. I searched around and found the 99 airbag flashing light fix post in the ecu sticky and tried the door switch thing twice on the driver side door and once on the passenger side for fun since the other two trys didn't work. Please post suggestions, or things to troubleshoot, or if its just best to go to the dealer and payyyyyyyyyy. Thanks in advance
I found on a post somewhere that a dealer said that this could be caused by a passenger having their feet under the seat where the airbag components are, and actually yesterday I was cleaning the interior and vacuumed underneath the seat, hopefully something just got disconnected, and I didn't suck up something that fell off or I need. Going to go check that out right now with a good flashlight.
I checked everything under both seats and all seems connected and all wires are in good condition. I saw two wires run up the side/back I'm assuming one is airbag and the other is the heater? Also found a phillips head drill bit and a quarter (that will put into the retrofit fund). Anyways, light still blinks. I tried the door push button thing again for fun and it didn't work.
Good luck. I have a 98 SE with Side airbags and it does it. What you can do is the yellow connector in the front of the seat is for the side airbags, any yellow connector is airbag/srs related. Disconnect the battery, let it sit for awhile, then disconnect the connector clean the contacts with some rubbing alcohol or w/e and see if that helps.
Basically what i happens, is the harness nissan used was a little to short, and what happens is when you move the seat forward and backwards a lot the harness gets stretched and someones it comes just pulls away a bit from the connector causing the srs light.
I checked mine with the Consult 2 with the BCM module card and it shows my passenger side module is OPEN. The cars never been in an accident thats all i can presume has happened.
Its a very common problem both my 98's did it.

My yellow connector has one tab broken off on the passenger seat. It has gone off a few times now, once from vacuuming under the seat and a few times from people moving the passenger seat. All I need to do it resecure the connector and reset the light a few times and it goes away. Too bad we were the guinea pigs of side airbags with nissan......
Okay, tomorrow I will specifically check the yellow wire(s) and all connectors and possible clean them if nothing works. I was wondering if you could pop that side air bag cover off to see the wires in there to see if one is loose, or would that be bad to the air bag or would it eject and make me sh*t myself?
By reseting the light do you mean pressing the door open/close sensor of the driver's side more than 10 times in 10 seconds fast, while the key is in the on position, then turning the key to off, closing the door, then turning the key back to on?
Thanks for the replies!
I'm happy the CC always on mod I attempted had nothing to do with it, does anyone think that might hurt the CC since it would make it always on, would that wear it out possibly? Any confirmations that me jumping 3+5 and 6+7 will indeed do it?

Revised Airbag Light Fix-Works everytime!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF YOUR AIRBAG LIGHT IS FLASHING WHILE YOU DRIVE 9 times out of 10 it is the passenger seat side air bag...the one that is inside of the seat...what you need to do is the following:
Open your door and first locate the button on pillar A....this little button is the drivers door switch and when the door is closed the button is pressed in making the car know that the door is actually closed....it is a small button with black rubber surrounding it. Once you locate it, turn your key to the ON position....DO NOT start the car...simply turn the power on so the engine light, battery and everything else is lit without engaging the ignition. Then with the key in the ON position press the drivers door switch at least 10 times within 10 seconds with your finger: in and out in and out fast......then once you have done that turn your key to the OFF position....when i did this I found it easy to turn the key half way between where you take it out and half way between ACC so nothing should be getting power...not even the radio but you should also not be able to pull the key out. Then close your door and with the key in that same position, between taking it out and ACC, start the car by turning it towards the ignition. This means don't take the key outta the ignition the whole time.
If you have a 99 9/10 it is the passenger SEAT airbag....the one that is actually in the seat and Nissan will try to tell you it is faulty but by doing this you will engage the system so it will work again. I know people that have had the seat air bag repaired and then the light has come on within a year. If it was the airbag that was in the dash I would say get it fixed but with it being a seat air bag even if it doesn't work the rest of the system will. Same thing happened to me and I got it diagnosed luckily for free at the dealership but then did the thing above and it hasn't come back on in over a year and a half. A lot of times they said it could be caused by a passenger having their feat under the seat where the air bag components are.
Give this a try and PLEASE PLEASE PM me if you don't get it.....don't waste your money, the unit still works.
Print this out and GO DO IT NOW!!!! It works.....mine went on in March 2004 and I was told by Nissan I needed a new passenger side SEAT airbag....the side curtain on that is INSIDE the actual seat of your car if you have it. Nissan said it was VERY common and it is faulty.....amazingly they even had some on-hand....follow this how -to!
this is not my write up its up inthe stickies had the same annoying problem and it is now gone!

Yeah that's the one I'm talking about, I'll be checking everything in the daylight today when I get back from school and I guess I'll try that for the 5th time...
Still wondering if I can pop that airbag cover off on the side of the seat to look at connections? Anyone know, will I damage anything?

Thats part of the air bag assembly i believe, Popping that cover off would NOT be a very safe idea. All the wiring that is there would be behind the seat and behind the air bag itself. If you pull off the panel behind the seat you know where the pocket is on the pass. side seat it should expose the wiring for the air bag. It shows how to remove the panel in the FSM.
Dude thanks for telling me to look in the fsm! It has everything I would need to know about the SRS, including what to look for and what to check. I'm just going to wait for my dad's laptop now so I can plug it in and read what specifically is wrong, so I can just check that, don't want to waste my time disassembling everything.
Okay so I was just going to wait for the laptop to get home to check the code to limit my search, but tonight when I got home my mom saw the light and asked about it and I told her about the wiring harness etc. and showed her the reset routine with the door switch, it didn't work like usual. She said maybe I was doing something wrong so out loud I read the instructions as I did it and it worked. The light is now gone, after the 8th or so attempt. I did it the same every time, it just worked this time. Thanks for the help guys, I think this thread is over!
