idle rpms problem

occasionally my rpms increase and decrease, mostly decrease, after driving my car for over 15 mins. somebody told me it could be a mass airflow problem. if so, how much am i looking at to repair? what else could it be and how expensive would it be... any help is appreciated

i'm having somewhat the same problem with my idle right now. are you throwing any codes? my cel came on a few days ago after my idle being jumpy for a few days (sometimes would idle normal, sometimes at 1500, others at like 1100, sometimes so low it stalls) and i checked it and it turned out to be the TPS (throttle positioning sensor). watch for some codes and if they pop it might very well be that. if it is, its an easy fix.

not yet... i ordered the new TPS yesterday so i'm waiting for that to come in. its a sensor located on the side to the trottle body. if you dont throw any codes than this might not be your problem. i just had the same sort of issues and thought that if you had your cel on that this might be it. my cel didnt come on for a few days after i noticed that my idle was being weird so theres a chance that it still might be your TPS. keep an eye out for any cel's and if they come up test them. i dont know how you would go and test to see if your TPS is good or not so i would guess that if you dont throw any codes for it, than it isnt the problem unfortunately. keep an eye out

+1 on the TPS.
A hunting idle speed is a good indication of a failng TPS.

I probably would have checked the throttle body and iacv. Clean those out then see if the problem is still around. I know when i did mine a few months ago it helped big time with fluctuating rpms, ecspecially at idle. And the cost, about 5 dollars for throttle body cleaner, and a few bucks for the gaskets, rags, little stuff.

Btw njmaxseltd, i blame you for me buying my bike this past spring. That picture in your sig made me want one so bad, so i just randomly went out and bought it. But its all cool, fun riding.

I would check/ clean the IACV first. Not to hard to do and should only take 45 mins to do.

a friend mentioned to me that it could possibly be the MAF, what are the chances of it being that, and can i fix that myself?

Yes cleaning or replacing the maf is pretty straightforward.
