Its only when the weather is cold so my guess is that the seal on it is old and it leaks when it shrinks from the cold . im thinking about fixing it when the weather gets wormer because im tired of checking the coolant every week =). so i was just thinking where can i get a water pump ? is the best place at the dealers ? what do you guys suggest ? thx

Pump: from Nissan. www.worldpartsexpress.com is my preferred source.

What to replace: pump is actually overkill - the o-rings are all that's actually damaged. The pump is an extra $75 - and I'm not sure the pumps themselves ever fail - you could probably just change the o-rings, but since you talk about being lazy maybe you should buy the pump too.

Follow the instructions in the links, get the FSM and print that section. The search provides all.

Would you actually replace just the o-rings, and not the pump? If you're in there anyway, I'd replace the pump. I relate it to pulling a trans just to replace a clutch disk, but not the PP or TOB. Personally I believe if you're putting so much labor into something, it's better to come out of it with everything taken care of, if only for piece of mind.

My water pump's seals were absolutely fine, and yet it still pissed out coolant constantly. I have it around here somewhere, I'll snap a pic or two.

My o-rings were definitely damaged and if I were being a total cheapskate it would have worked to just replace them. Remember, if you're a cheapskate labor is somehow free.

However, you'd have to take the risk that the o-rings are the only problem. Since the pump was only another $75 I chose to replace the pump, no question. Do it once, do it right.

I know that this is not going to be very popular, but due to the fact that you are unsure where to buy a waterpump, I'd take it to a shop and have them do it. You can mess up your timing and eventually the engine if you don't know exactly what you are doing. Not trying to scare you, just trying to provide some perspective.

I would not pay more than $300-$400 for the shop to do it.

Just for clarification....

If you're insinuating that you're going to buy the water pump from the cheapest place you can find, then go to the dealer for installation, then your idea probably won't work. 99% of dealerships will not install non OEM parts, let alone parts not bought from them. Just some food for thought.

However, if you buy a Nissan part from a lower-cost dealer (ahem: www.worldpartsexpress.com) and carry them the part, they may install it.

I would just say I was going to do it myself and it's just too (cold/much work/difficult) for me would you do it for me? They can't argue with the part since it's a Nissan part and the package is unopened.

I have seen some dealers charge ABOVE retail price for parts. What's $80 from worldpartsexpress may be $140 at these dealers. Not to mention they use book rate for labor, so if the mechanic is efficient and fast you still get gouged. I'd buy the part from Nissan and take the car to an independent mechanic. There's nothing real special about changing it.
