yeah, the redness on those parts mean they were overheating, least thats what i was told on last tranny i did. how bad was the slip and was it still shifting when you took it out??? pics of any worn parts would be cool. i feel like i'm staring into the sun though, try with no flash.

yeah try using a MACRO mode on your camera and it will automatically turn the flash off, but you should have enough ambient lighting

Why did you put them inline and not just as links? 30 1024x768 pictures inline is rather annoying when on an older computer, dialup, or a 'small' resolution (which used to be 1024x768, not sure what people mainly use now).

Did you cut the wiring harness to the solenoid pack?

Some nice heat scoring and wear on the drum in DSCN0018.

I miss rebuilding automatics...some were just damn easy.

Be glad your trans at least drove...mine would go forward no matter what position the shifter was in, even tried to in park (parking pawl prevented that though, gladly).

It slipped so much because of the bad solenoids that it just plain wore the friction material off of the clutches, and essentially spot welded the clutches to the steels. I had to hook up a slide hammer to get the damn things apart, and to tear down the trans.

Gave the case and other random pieces to a friend so he could scrap them, still have the open diff and the TC laying around at my school down in TN.

I wonder if those bad solenoids on '97 caused so much premature wear on the clutces?
Was it just the '97s that had the recall?

I have a '95, and my trans was replaced by Carmax a week after I got it for slipping like crazy. The invoice says they replaced the solenoids, but who knows.

6 months after that, that trans died. I swapped the VB over to a MY2000 trans I got from Dixit, which later died as a result of my bad solenoids (the pics above came from Dixit's trans). I then got a $300 junkyard trans that's been holding up just fine for the past...year, maybe.

well sure enough i found the problem the first and second gear clutches arent burnt up pretty bad as for what reall causes this common prpoblem beyond normal wear and tear in AUTO maxima's who knows, maybe upgraded clutches in first through second will help eliminate that problem but as for 3rd and fourth there friction material is almost new like, this tranny has 120,000miles though so it is looking pretty damn good anyway heres some more pics to add to the collection

Good job on tearing up the Auto tranny, I always wanted to know how It looked like and how It operated. 120,000 miles on that tranny looks new or It barley has been broken In.
P.S I have a weird whinning noise and It's more like a whining noise off a SC but light. I hear the noise when I have the car In any gears forcept the Park. any clues. THANKS.

i was thinking of doin the tps b4 i do the trans, my tech said i should help but pointed out at 173,000 i'm probably due for a replacement. i found a 66,000 tranny for 650.00 and a shop to install for 500.00, i think that trans will probably hold up a long time. re-builds are a waste of money. never had any luck with them, always break down after a year.

My buick does the same thing ive narrowed it down to the trans fluid having air bubbles in it due to not having my trans fluid filled all the way to where its suppose to be. It never went away either till i flushed my tranny and refilled with new fluid problem went away then....probably the same with nissan's to... otherwise though **** it if its shifting crisply dont worry about it
