retard timing using knock sensor?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if I could retard my timing by unplugging the knock sensor and having the max use the safe table. The reason I'm asking is because I failed emissions and I need to get them done asap. I failed NOx and I was told that on cars with distributors, they retard the timing to decrease combustion chamber temperatures and reduce NOx levels. Can this be done on the max?

Thanks

Thats not your fix.
Put a set of new spark plugs in, clean your TB and have the car checked again.
If it fails again, you should look at your o2's

I know its not a fix. I was asking if it could work.
The problem is a restricted egr pipe and I dont have the time to clean it out right now plus its winter and I dont have a garage.

There's really only one way to find out. Try it. It does retard timing but we're distributor-less sooooo

you could try it I do not think it will work cause the car is not under much of a load during testing. I would try 93+ gas, testing the car cold and if you have a afpr add a lb or 2 of fuel psi. high NOx is a result of high combustion chamber temps and a lean burn. since your egr system is clogged try everything else to lower your temps or just slide the guy a few extra bucks
