Now that you can search, learn how...

i'm noticing a lot of old posts getting bumped by new members. the search is there so you can find answers to your questions, not bring up new (old) ones. if the thread is 2 years old and doesn't answer your question try another one. if your question never gets answered theres probably a reason. if you can't find the answer on the .org google it. if its just a lame question keep it to yourself. if you've met all the previous criteria start a new thread. when everyone said "search" when you asked a question they meant search for the answer, not search for more people asking the same question.

cmon but lame questions are the fuNNest

excellent that you noticed new users using the search function. i also notice pmohr answering in every single AUTO transmission problem thread (as well as other noob and non noob threads) a lot lately - this maybe because the "im new here and i have a question" thread has not been bumped in forever, which in turn is because there has not been a mod in this section for like 5 months now ?

PS (phenerviv or whatever his name was always bumped that thread to the top of the first page if it got lost)

we need a new mod, i nominate myself - obviously

He's phenryiv1. I sent him and Kevlo a PM a few days ago, I updated the Maintenance thread of all broken and dead links, no responses yet.

I think I should be a moderator Who votes for pmohr?

My ESP told me you were talking about me...

I try to be helpful. But as I'm sure you've seen from my points, I have my...limits. People that don't search really start to **** me off, that's why I spend a lot of time in AM, regional, and OT.

I have definitely seen a lot more searches showing up in my logs since the search has gone open to all users, though.

I am just tired of all the NOOBZ posting answers to questions that are out of their leauge. But ... that happens on every forum, so not much to do about it. Besides that - Pmohr would make a good Mod ... IMO!

Kevlo posted not long ago something about NOT posting lame, non descriptive, one or two word threads and I couldn't agree more damn it. P ... if you become a Mod - ya gotta help stop that crap.

Why not lock those old threads?

This is a tough subject, one that most forums that are more than a few months old go through. A new member does not have knowledge of what is an obvious question and what isn't. To someone who just signed up, "what offset should 18x8 rims have" may be no more or less obvious than "what would it take to get to 300 awhp". The former could be quickly answered or found in a basic 5 minute search, the latter is likely to start a flame war, but the point is that someone who has been here a year (or 4 in my case) should not have an expectation that a new member will know what has been beaten to death and what hasn't. Even some topics that have been beaten to death never get conclusively answered.

We (admins/mods) expect that when a new member asks a question, it gets answered by those that know the answer or have a qualified opinion (in the case of more subjective questions like tire choice, etc). Members have no obligation to answer the question, but telling someone to search isn't an answer. A good reply to the wheel offset question could be: Quote:
I used the search function and found this thread about wheel fitments on Evos... an 18x8 with a 35mm offset will fit properly.

In that manner, the new user gets his answer and realizes he can find out a lot by searching. That is not flaming someone, it's educating. When users throw in insults into the answer, it discourages the user from posting more questions, but may also discourage them from relaying their newfound knowledge or from even coming back to the site, and that's why we don't tolerate it.

---------------------

an observation...
It seems like EVERYONE is soo concerned about reposts, and do a search... I don't see what the big deal is.. half the questions asked are probably reposts, but the replies can be off topic. If a thread is old, whats the point of keeping it... 15, 20 pages on the forum, whats the point of even having a forum if all questions that are asked always have a reply "REPOST, do a search" its so rediculous. I've belonged to many forums, and this is the first one where this is such a big deal. Who cares... a question was asked, repost or not, if you can help, help; if not.. move on...

moderators or whatever they are called, just delete threads that are 1 month old.. if its a good thread, sticky it. Even look at the How-To sections, 80% (rough estimate) of the links are DEAD.. whats the point????

dont' mean to go off, but every question i asked on this forum was little or no help at all.. and doing a search via google gives replies from other gens too, so the replies are useless. yes, you can say donate to have better search options, but why donate to a site that has be little or no help at all??

what i'm referring to is bumping five year old questions and posting "". 1) the question was probably answered in a more recent post and 2) if it wasn't then it is either a dumb question or an answer has never been found.

bringing up these long outdated posts is a great way to spread misinformation. somebody will read it and think it is current and a whole new truth has come to light since the original post.

This forum honestly does need more blue unames around (that's my pimp way of referring to mods). I just find it odd neither Kevlo nor Phenryiv have responded or apparently even viewed the updates I made:

Of course with this adblocker stuff posted in my sig (:attention), I'm sure they wouldn't be too appreciative of me being a mod.
I don't see why they should hold it against you, your just trying to keep the peace. In fact, I wasn't sure of what everybody was complaning about "ads" until I remembered I've always run an ad-blocker- so I didn't even see them. forget the pipe lol...information is power.

Edit: Mohf, IB is the new owner of the site...Iwas just joking ->there are NO y-pipes for everybody, just some sarcasm.
