Throttle Postioning Sensor(TPS)or bad transmission?

Ok, I have two conflicting opinions from two different mechanics. I first took my Maxima in the get looked at, because my transmission seems to sometimes take too long to up shift into the next gear, and the engine rpm's at highway speed (65mph) are around 3500rpms when they should be between 2500 and 3000rpms,like it can't go into a higher gear, and my CEL is on. The first mechanic I took it to said that I only have 1st and 3rd gear and that I need a new transmission, But before handing over 2 grand of my hard earned money, I wanted to get a second opinion. The second mechanic said that I have a bad TPS and that is what is causing the transmission to shift erratically. I don't know what to think now Do you guys think I should get a 3rd opinion? The first place I took in to was Cottman Transmission, not too sure about them, but the guy seemed nice and the second was a local mechanic, Michael Crone Transmission, he puts his name on the door, I respect that.

I hope the problem is the TPS. My Max has 124,000 miles on her now, I have babied that thing since I bought it used in 2003 with 87,000 miles on it then. I know 97 Maxima's have had problems with auto transmissions going prematurely. I had my trans fluid changed about a year ago but not flushed, the second guy said it look fine.

Well have you checked the TPS at all?

5 minutes with a multimeter will tell you if it's at least adjusted properly.

KS is KS, often triggered by others. Don't worry about it quite yet. There's only one, so bank designation is irrelevant (other motors, for example the LS1 and the 7M have dual knock sensors).

P1130: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ighlight=p1130

P1605: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ighlight=p1605

0804
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0804 is detected when the signal from the Transmission Control Module is not sent to the Engine Control Module. The factory service manual identifies these possible causes:
- Harness or connectors (the communications line circuit between ECM and TCM is open or shorted.)
- TCM
- Weak or dead battery

Go to Autozone and get your codes check, than report back. Geez.

But I had a TPS problem and the transmission was slipping like crazy, changed the TPS and it worked fine again.

Could the TPS make the tranny slip before throwing a code?

When i tried to measure the resistance on mine, it was 1Kohm @ closed and 4.8Kohm @ wot. The sucker wasn't even all that warm.

Um, not sure, my code was on for a while and I neglected it until the tranny started slipping. Don't do the same.

I see, it's just that i'm not too sure of the resistance. But i don't have any codes. Thanks for the advice, you're saying that if you DO have a code, then take care of it right away!

I had the same problem, I replaced tps but problem was still there, I was about to rebuild tranny when mechanic tested tps one more time and guess what even new tps was bad, got another adjusted it, put external ground to tps, and transmission shifts like new.

Make sure you check all electricals before touching tranny
