hesitation when gas is low

i have this odd hesitation problem whenever the gas has only 1/4 left or less. if i stomp on the gas or even accelerate quickly, i got this hesitation almost like there wasn't enough gas. could it be the fuel pump? the thing is when i have plenty of gas like 1/2 or more, i wouldn't have this hesitation problem. i could stomp on the gas and the car would go without any problems. there are no codes, no leaks, and i also used premium gas. if it was the fuel pump, i probably would have the hesitation problem regardless of how much gas is in the car right? however, this hesitation problem only occur when i have 1/4 or less gas left. another thing, if i accelerate slowly/normally, there is no hesitation problem. any ideas?

If you suspect the fuel pump monitor your fuel pressure when the tank is full and when it gets below 1/4 tank.

probly the fuel pump is gradually dieing. IIRC the fuel pump has to work harder when there is less gas in your tank.

yes i was boosted once. i did changed out the walbro for a new stock pump when i took the sc out. however, that thread helped because i think it could be the position of the strainer that is my problem. i think i got a bit lazy when i changed out the pump. i think i put the strainer in a bit of a vertical position rather than a parallel position. i didn't thought much of it at the time. didn't thought it would affect anything. this weekend i'm going to check it out. thanks.

Yeah, I thought I remembered your name in SC threads back in the day...

I hope the strainer is indeed your problem. Report back with your findings.

Reminds me of the time at the drag strip when my low fuel light was on for the last 5 runs and the car would hesitate in third & fourth gear. I still somehow took first place that night but later ran out of gas completely 2 miles outside the track lol That was a fun night ^_^

about the walbro strainer thing, i never had a problem with that in my sc days. and as you guys know who run at the track, you had to keep your fuel level as low as possible to keep the weight down. back then, even with little gas left, i never had any hesitation problem. weird that in my boosted days, i hardly had any problems. no problems with the sc, transmission, or anything, car was running perfectly. now that i'm basically all stock again, i have this problem and a few others. go figure...

Cumalot? Where the h. did you come from???? I had to check the date of your original post to make sure it was 2008 and not 2004, before I answered.

I had the same problem after I changed my fuel pump years ago. I always had to keep 1/4 tank or greater. After much procrastination, I looked inside the gas tank. Sure enough, the 'modular' little 'Lego' pieces that you put together to make up the strainer/intake had fallen apart. Double check that.

Also, depending on how you position the fuel line that comes off of the pump it can get kinked when you reinstall the cover. Had this happen to me once. Experienced the same crap....bucking when the gas low. Didn't even have to get to the empty line to do it.
