It might be just easier to buy new carpeting. It's also not as expensive as some may think.

ARe you sure that the "water damage" is contained only to the interior?

Checkout that motor.
Nothing worse than buying a car and then finding out that there is MAJOR problems with it.

Sounds like flood damage. <cough> Katrina </cough>

I would never buy it, even for parts.

To me it sounds like the car was sitting with windows cracked open and rain got into it and stained it. I have seen it before, and looks pretty bad in some cases.

Guys are right, a better remedy would be given if there are pics.

Another thing, the car being NJ does not eliminate it from being in Katrina...just less likely.

There are other floods than Katrina. Location doesnt mean squat.

Check the engine first.

Good idea, if you have a couple Gs to blow. I'm not a big fan of the red either.

Repainting, in my opinion, is not a good idea, simply because it will cost you around $2000. So unless there are major rust/paint issues, I wouldnt do it.

As far as cleaning the interior... maybe regular carpet cleaners? And is it actual water damage or was the floor part a complete joke? Or did he just spill alcohol everywhere? That would be quite a waste

I say post some pics up so we all can fight over it some more

No but seriously, if it has a salvage title for being in a flood, I would run away from it. However if the guy just left his windows open or something, I would look for another maxima as a "parts car" and swap interiors and part out the rest of the car to pay for the new interior your car will get.

Not true.

Like the others said, lots of ways for water to get into a car.

Unless you're looking for something to strip and make into a racecar, I'd move on.

CLARIFICATION****

it looks! like it was driven into the ocean....just comparing how bad the inside looks.... ne water damage would be from salt from living in a coastal area

if you wanna check to see if it has been under water ... pull apart the brake light connector in the back, try several under the hood too .... dirt = water has been in there. also ... pull the seat belts (especially the rears) all the way out, look at the belt, any mold - mildew, does it smell ... check it out right or get someone to do it for you. or ... possibly waste your money

when I had my tan interior... I had a crap load of stains due to friends being careless. Needless to say, I stripped out the carpet, (took about a hour, or so, once you find all the bolts and clips), and got it washed/scrubed with heavy duty detergent, finished it off pressure washing it, and letting out to dry for a week. It came out, brand spankin new..

Bring it to a professional detail shop, the right equipment cleans up any car.
I own a detail shop in Ramsey NJ, if your around that area send me a PM and I'll take a look at the vehicle for you.

I live in Indiana and at school we have several Katrina vehicles that were donated to us. Including an 05 Harley that my teacher fixed up and drives every single day. Currently we are working on an Equinox and it just had a bunch of mud in it. But nothing works on it. There was even mud in between the headliner and the roof. Take the car to the local BMV and ask them to run the vin to see where it was previously located.
