so im getting CEL 1008 (P1445) which is for this thing so i take it off, do the ohmmeter test (which it fails) then i set it down and little black flecks fall out. upon more shaking i get all this. it smells like gasoline (expected) but why do i have this carbon build up in it?

I might have aproblem like this also, the small black vacuum tube that runs from the EVAP canister purge control valve to the EVAP canister purge volume control valve(the one u have pictured above), the hose is sucking itself closed when in P or N, and starts making a ticking noise, I gotta take mine apart check it out.

yup, makes sense, the valve in mine was stuck closed and it also made a ticking noise. are you also getting a cel 1008 (P1445)?

If the evap valve is bad, could it cause a smell of fuel in the car?
How many miles on that valve?

Hey I accidently removed that "thing" when I was looking for the IACV...i know. So i decided to take it apart and stripped one of the three bolts. I don't have any codes, but I also have a ticking noise right around that area of the engine bay. What's the specific ohmmeter reading supposed to be around?

30 ohms, there are 6 prongs:

123
456

the 30 ohms is measured between 2 and 1, 2 and 3, 5 and 4, 5 and 6.

Hmm, I remember cleaning out some charcol (I think it is from the canister in the back, not from anything combustion related) when I was trying to chase down the stupid 1444 code.

bad canister

Well the carbon build up comes from the EVAP canister, on the back of your car. It means it is internally broken and must be replaced.
