HOW TO: THE CHEAP end all wheelhop mod.
Ive heard of this a couple years ago, don’t remember who it was from but I figured id give it a shot and see how it went. Well I wouldn’t be making this how to if it wasn’t the best bang for buck mod to get rid of wheelhop once and for all! I really couldn’t believe the difference it made in my wheelhop situation. It got so bad to the point where I couldn’t even floor it in 1st gear anymore or even think about trying to launch for the fear I would brake a tooth from my mouth from the violent shaking aswell as the drivetrain LOL. Given the fact that my rear mount was basically ripped apart plays a huge roll, but even then this mod can rid of all signs of hop once and for all.
I was just looking for a solution to this hop BS sense I had suspension already and don’t want poly mounts due to the vibration they cause. Traction bars are great but im on a budget right now running my own business and didn’t want to spend allot of cash trying to rid this problem if I didn’t have to. This is the perfect alternative because there’s no vibration but all the effect of solid mounts plus some, and it only costs $25!
Note: See post 2 for pics associated with steps 4-8.
Tools:
Eyes & Hands
Floor jack and jack stand
Materials:
$24.99
6' "re-tractable" ratcheting tow straps from your local Checker, Schuck's, Kragen, Advance Auto, Murrys and or partsamerica.com(NA online)
Part# 34413
How to:
STEP 1- Jack one side of your car up or both if you want. Make sure to use jack stands so u don’t get hurt! (literally my grandpa died that way..)
Step 2- Were going to be working with your front lower motor mount. Make sure you know where it is. If you’re under the car its bolted to the cross member so u can follow it up to the motor where your going to need to place one hook.
Step 3- You want to take one of the ratcheting straps from the packaging. Take the side that’s stationary(the one that you cant pull out to make 6') and you want to hook that on the very top of the motor mount plate/u shaped bracket where it attaches to the block. There’s about an inch lip it has on the very top. If you feel around your trying to feel right under the 2nd and 3rd exhaust ports on the head from the passenger side, or runners if you have headers like me you can see what I mean here..
Step 4- Sense the bracket that connects the motor mount to the block is a U type shape you can obviously run the rest of the tow strap either in front or behind the actual rubber mount itself to wrap around the cross member. Very important to run it BEHIND! Therefore it will be going straight down from the bracket to the cross member.
Step 5- As seen in the picture below(step 5 pic) unlock the ratcheting part and pull out enough slack to wrap the loose end around the cross member and hook the hook back around the strap itself. Then lock ratchet button into place.
Step 6- With the actual ratcheting part facing the passenger side wheel tighten it as much as possible while keeping an eye on the loose hook to ensure it hooks to the strap properly. See picture below for what you should be looking at(step 6) Aswell as making sure the upper hook stays centered on the mount bracket. To get it extra tight I personally took my 2nd strap from the package in the house and hooked an end onto the metal part of the one on the car to "hold it in place" while I reefed on the ratchet thing to get that one extra click out of it to get TIGHT!
Step 7- Jack up car enough to remove jack stand(s) and lower car to the ground.
Step 8- Take her for a test drive! Start off slow so as to make sure everything settles into its place. Maybe a highway cruise to warm up. Try out a 1st gear slam to see if there’s any hint of hop. Go ahead and launch the $hit out of it and enjoy your new mod courtesy of shortyblu95!!

As i said in the first few sentances of the 1st post it was night and day. I had major hop issues and they are completly gone! Well worth my time. Weather or not others decide to follow and try this is up to them. I do know that if your getting any wheelhop that you cant shake now youll be more than satisfied with buying the "strap mod". Just made this so anyone that searrches in the future will have a quick fix answer to wheel hop issues. Even if they really need new mounts or bushings ect.

So to sum it up...
You have bad motor mounts
You have no money for new ones
You strap the engine down with nylon tie downs
Now you can beat the cr@p out of it again and spin your wheels
Am I missing something here?
Where is my rice cooker? :

He did a cheap-*** mod and reduced wheelhop. Do you have a problem with that? Bring forward any cons to this setup, otherwise gtfo and just move on to the next thread.
I personally am not a huge fan of this simply because I dont view tow straps holding stuff together as reliable, but good post nonetheless

Wow thats a pretty crude way of putting it. You dont have to use it and its not so i can do burnouts dude. I drag race and wheelhop at the track is something that i refuse to deal with. Plain and simple it took my wheelhop issues and threw them out the window. Calling this post rice is in itself pretty childish its not like im posting up pictures about how to get the bluest headlights or get the loudest exhaust. Like i said though take it or leave it either way, worked for me and thats all that matters to me.

I also did this mod in the past and it DOES infact work awesome! Cant believe such a simple thing would work that good but it did. I didnt even really have any wheel hop issues, but i did it anyway and it really just feels like it tightened everything up. When your in a gear and stab the gas or starting from a stoplight you can just feel the more "solidness" or w/e you want to call it. Im sure if someone is nervous about the strap melting or something just put some heatwrap on it and call it a day. I had one on my car for over a year without any ill issues. Thanks for the write up!

good write up i might be intrested on doing this its a very inexpensive mod if someone want to d**keat because its ghetto owell tough cookies good stuff iam going to be doing this very soon after i get my MaF

Dude, that is the most ghetto thing I have ever seen. However I do applaud your ingenuity. I did this one time to a s10 with a v8 swap, but we at least used a chain that was pulled tight. My poly mounts are curing in the toaster oven right now. I was planning on doing a write up on it when I was done. It only costs $35 and a weekend with out your car.

wow... that is all i can say. i read your post and thought there is no way this will eliminate wheelhop. but for the 1$ I spent for a 300lb ratcheting tow strap i thought i mine as well try. took me less then 5 min ( could have been 1 if i used the pit at work) and i strapped my 1 dollar mod on. I went for a 'spin' and tried to make my car hop... it wouldnt. there was no extra vibration. if anything less vibration at idle and my acr would not hop on michelin x ice @ 25 psi( i know they are low). cant wait till the k sports go on it and i can realy test it out at the track.
all in all well worth the 1$ and 5 min of my time
Also for everyone saying its ghetto and you should just spend the extra money on poly mounts. I have driven a few civcs with all poly mounts and the vibration was horible. sure for a track car poly is great but for a daily driver you want it to be comfortable( as it is in the summer my coilovers start to anoy after a few months). so this "ghetto mod" not only keeps my car comfortable but prevents damage to my drivetrain
