Driver's side window glass removal and replacement...

Need some info guys....

As you may know already from a post a while ago about a girl backing into my driver's side door....

Well, I've found a new door for a decent price($110) by my house. The only problem with it is that it is green and the window is broken out of it.

My plan is to take my current glass from my dented door and put it in the new green door. Has anyone done this before? I need to know what all it involves and what the level of difficulty is.

Thanks FanaticRockford for the tips on door removal.

How to

You first take out all screws from the cover. Three in the bottom one hidden in the handle pocket. Then you will need to remove the cover around the lever to open the door. This can be a bit dificult, use a flat screwdriver on top and bottom of the lever cover until it snaps out. Then you pop out the cover pulling gently out and upwards. Before you unplug the electrical connectors, lower the window until you can see both screws that hold the window bracket to the crane. One of the screws need to be ligned up with one of the holes in the door sheet metal. Then, unplug the electrical connectors and get the door cover out of the way. Remove the screws that hold the window bracket to the crane (2). Remove the window by lifting with both hands.

Note: to remove the screws you will have to remove the film that seals the door frame. This can be difficult to get back to its original location. You might preer to perforate the film to get the screw and then seal it back with tape.

Thanks guys for the info,

GreenSE, I've taken off the inner door covers and speakers so it sounds pretty easy the way you made it out to be. Thanks again!

Is there a way to remove the glass from the door with the window still in the UP position? I just have the door laying on the ground.

Check these options:
  • Apply 12 Volts to the electric motor connector and move the window down. The connector should be accessible near the window motor (round metal thingy attached to the door frame with three screws). You could bring the door close to the car, take the door panel off your car and use the car power window connector on the separated door.
  • A more destructive way would be to cut the crane wire so you can slide the window down manually
  • Another way would be to remove the electric motor form the crane, but I do not think you can do that with the window installed.

That way you could move the window to the position you need to remove the window base screws.

Thanks GreenSE, I ended up just carrying the door over next to my car, pulled the harness out of my car and hooked it up to the new door and rolled that bich down.
