95-96 vs 97-99 catback differences

I searched this but couldnt come up with anything...if you find a link let me know. otherwise:

I know there is a difference with the cat backs for these 2 sets of years, i just cant remember what it is. could any one enlighten me?

the reason im asking is because im selling my megan racing catback and i had this on a 96, but the cat back also had an extra piece about 6inches long that went from the cat to the b-pipe. does this mean i had a 97-99 cat back on a 96 with an extra piece? if i were to put this on a 97-99 would this be a direct fit without that piece?

the thing is i no longer have this 6in piece and people are asking me if the exhaust will bolt directly up to their 97-99 max and im not 100% sure.

the O2 sensor locations are different, and the length of the overall exhaust is different as well.

Quick question guys. I had my cat back replaced and I noticed that after the muffler the pipe goes over a metal brace of some sort. The only thing is that the exhaust is pinched to about 2/3 diameter at that point to clear the metal. Is it supposed to be like that or was this a ghetto fit attempt by my mechanic? I would hate to lose power for nothing, especially since I have a Y-Pipe.

The exhaust piping ends at the muffler, there's nothing after it.

Do you mean the exhaust brace after the resonator?

Stock replacement or custom?

The stock B is rather restrictive overall, IIRC there is a narrow section above the bracing there.

95's, 96's, 99's, and early 97's have a 'B' pipe that bolts directly to the cat. The rear O2 is in the cat except for the 99 which has no rear O2.

98's, and later 97's have a short 'S' pipe behind the cat that houses the rear O2 sensor. This makes the 'B' pipe shorter.

Most aftermarket cat backs and 'B' pipes are the same length and replace the silly 'S' pipe. Those 'B' pipes have a bung for the rear O2 sensor. The Meagan is an exception. With the 'S' pipe it will fit all years.

Note: The cats are the same size and shape and will fit all 4th gens. The earlier cats have a small O2 bung. Its the size of a spark plug (1.5x14mm IIRC). The newer cats have no hole. The newer O2 is larger (1.5x18mm IIRC).

Also the 95/96 have a shorter rear bumper so the stock muffler has a shorter outlet. Some aftermarket brands take this into account, some dont. It's hit or miss, the tip may stick out on a 95/96 or fall short for the 97-99.

JSutter...so late 97s and 98s have that S-pipe as part of their stock exhaust?

You shouldnt have a problem as long as you plug the o2 sensor bung that you cant use....my greddy sp2 came with a bolt to put into that b pipe bung....

the 99 has only 1 the way i understand it....

95-96 have a O2 sensor in the headers, and then in the cat.
97-98 have one in the sensor and after the cat. (in the b pipe)
99 have only one in the headers

I have a 99 Fed spec and have two in the y pipe and one after the cat, but before the resonator.

No OBD-II car is only going to have one O2 sensor. There will always be a downstream and an upstream.

Cali specs are even worse, they have 4 - up and downstream for each bank.
