The usual drill is--(1) replace the VSS (it's on the tranny--only about $25), (2) tighten the screws on the back of the instrument cluster, then (3) replace the speedo (cluster). I ended up paying $40 for a used cluster from someone on the forum, and it's been fine since.

well, see i took my car in when it threw the VSS code and CEL was on and they said it was a lose wire, so they fixed it...supposedly. 2 weeks later CEL comes back on and NOW it turns out that the speedo head needs to be replaced. But then 2 weeks after that my CEL went off and even though my speedo is sometimes intermittent, when it stopes working I just tap heavily on the speedo cluster and that fixes it.

I really don't mean to hijack this thread but, I need some help here.

I love my max and do all the work myself so I want to know if the problem I have, can be fixed by me.

So my speedo tweaks out whenever I hit the freeway and go above 60 mph. Basically it'll jump like 5 mph up and down. Or it will go down to 0 briefly and then jump back up again. Now normally this wouldn't bother me but now its starting to dim my lights when ever it jumps. Kinda makes me feel that the car is going to die out.

Note. the speedo never "tweaks" when im doing city driving or going around 50mph.

I tried tightning the screws but to no avail. Someone please advise.

Thank you

just buy a used cluster and switch the speedos, easy fix

although it sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere on the harness, i would check that first and check the actual vss itself, make sure the connection is good

what about the km's your new(used) speedo is gonna show? Where I live its illegal to switch the speedo(overall km's) to anything less than what you have(obv), but I wouldnt want it showing more that what I have either. Whats the solution to that(legally)? I had the p0500, and p0600, they are intermittent and I have tried about 3 different VSS's(in the tranny). I think if I fix the p0500, it wont throw the p0600 either.
