4th Gen in the snow

Not bad at all. Got the 15" sawblades installed for the winter with no name tires that have a semi aggresive tread pattern. That helps. Also, too much torque in 1st gear so from a standstill on slippery roads, starting in 2nd does the trick. Much better then my old RWD Dakota or my old MKIII Jetta. All in all, 4th Gen max isnt that bad in the snow. Obviously not the best but def managable.
What do you guys think?

Btw...cant wait until after work to have some ebrake fun!!

Better then my 1980 Datsun 210! They do quite well in the snow. I though it was bad until I tried driving my Datsun.

Datsun!? Holy old skool! lol. I had a Datsun 810 wagon that I bought when I was 15 for $100. Ended up in inpound (me driving while being 15 and all).
I guess the 6 cylinders over the front wheels helps.

HIJACKING THE THREAD! W000000000000000T!!!

Haha, they certainly do do well in the snow... until the tires fill up with snow because youve gone to one... no, to seven too many parking lots

I have some Kuhmo all seasons on GXE steelies for winter and my Max sucks in the snow. I've gotten stuck in 3-4" of snow on more than one occasion since I got them. Next winter if I still have the Max I think I might finally invest in some true snow tires. Crappy tires make for some fun high speed ebrake drifts though.

I actually like driving the Paseo in the winter time. For a FWD car it gets real tail happy in the snow...it's a good time.

1st - "do do" is fine in this case. I used the expression "they certainly do" and then went on to describe the action, which is "do well in the snow". That's like saying "we certainly do like maximas" except in my post the second verb is "do" as opposed to "like".

Dude, chill. I didnt know you where a very serious english major. I have a juvenile sense of humor. Im 31 and still think its funny when somebody says or writes "do do". Chalk that up to having grown up on Beavis and Butthead.
I do do donuts on slick roads and I do do them in parking lots even though it might be unsafe while others are doing what they need to do in said areas I do, however, make sure that when I do decide to do them, I try and make sure I am alone while doing donuts.

I don't even notice when there is snow... have snow tires.

On ice, the slip light might flash a couple times.

Makes it harder to get slides in a parking lot though... but you just make up for the tires with more speed.

Once you go with snow tires, you never go back. Snow tires are the new black.

Capital N5000 Summer Tires w/ 20% tread = not an easy drive in the snow...

They are just holding me over until April when I get the MM's put on.

Nice dude.surprisingly My SE-R with no name all season tires handled way better than my max but still the max handles pretty good. with half worn all seasons on my steelys.

one time My SE-R drove threw 8" of snow that in some parts was higher then my front bumper and would fly up on to my windshield. I barely had a problem.

Eh-heh, you said do do. That was cool.

Any of you snow drivers have ABS on your 4th gens? How well do they keep you pointed straight in the snow? Some systems don't work so well when it gets that slick. Am here in San Diego, so I haven't driven my Max in snow yet. But I'm headed over the mountains soon, and there is snow in them thar hills.

Its so so with ABS... I have to say at times I rather have ABS off because if one tire slips wen the others don't... ABS go on right away even if the other tires are on dry pavement.

I was just outside brushing and scraping the windows and f-ed up part of my .org decal scraped off half of the M so now it says /|AXIMA.ORG

Btw, be careful out there - I was sliding around a corner earlier and there was a lamp post basically at the apex. I was feeling cautions (lol) and tried to straighten but instictively went for the brakes which, of course, simply increased the angle. Smacked myself (well I would have if I wasnt turning the wheel) and got on the gas - bingo! Straightened right out. In all of my sideways adventures Ive always known to stay off of the brakes if I was to point the nose straight again but today... didnt happen... ugh lol

IMO, it all depends on your tires.

Ya the Pebble Beige is somewhere under there.

My Max does great in the snow. Lived in Flagstaff for 2 years, and the first winter I had my car, I was scared. But it turned out alright. But when ya hit black ice on the highway unexpectedly...not cool. Beginning of December I was making a trip back up there to visit the BF and hit black ice. First snow of the season, and I slid right off the road (full circle and all) into the median (good thing no one was around and the median was a minor ditch filled with grass). But the Max was just fine. I wasn't...for a couple weeks. Hey it really scared a girl like me who's never had anything like that happen to her!

5spd, LSD, stock, SE 5spoke rims, with Ecsta ASX ALL season, 70 to 80 % thread. I absolutely hate driving this in the snow... matter of fact this thing cant take ANY precipitation. I think my supra would be better off.

EDIT: In the dry, however she's a gift from the havens to drive. (even though i do need to lower her and get smaller sidewall tires so it stops being a boat in the corners)

Goodyear Comfortread tires made my snow commute comfy. Got started in over 4 inches at 7am, nothing plowed. Slid around quite a bit, but thats to be expected in over 4 inches of fresh snow on the ground. Thank god I got behind a plow truck going over the mountain. 45% grade down hill wasn't fun, even following the plow. Thank you ABS.

Yup, Continental Winter Viking 2.
I believe they're only sold in Scandinavia.
You're right, they can take on almost anything - but they're insanely loud though!

I put on a set of Dunlop M3 Winter Sport tires. Not studded like those Winter Vikings, but they are snow tires. And my car loves driving in snow. I spent Friday driving from PA to NH in our F-150 4x4 with generic all-season tires in that big snowstorm. I wished, wished, wished I could have been driving the Maxima. 4x4 on all-seasons < FWD Maxima with snow tires.

Snow driving is not about FWD or AWD or 4x4. It's about the tires.

^ really?
I had those Falkens on my Jetta and they where horrible in the snow. Maybe the fact that we've got the extra weight of 6 cylenders on top of the tires, as well?

I dont think the VQ is that heavy? In fact I believe (correct me if Im wrong here, I might be) that its pretty light for what it is (3.0L V6).
I have crappy all-season kumhos that suck in any type of weather, and no ABS... you just have to know what youre doing and you'll be fine. (obv tires help a lot, just saying you dont need them)

Well, you dont wanna gun it on ice or you wont get tracktion, thats for sure. I was just saying about those Falkens inparticular...I loved them in dry or wet conditions but on snow...forget it...I thought they sucked. I never had them on A max, though. Maybe that little bit of extra weight helps with the traction.
Also, knowng what youre doing wont help you very much on bald tires in ice and snow. You do need them to be at least within spec, otherwise, Its just dangerous for you and everyone around you. Just my .02

I remember one winter my father drove around in a 2000lbs rwd tincan on literally bald tires. For some reason he got studded tires the following season lol
