wierd idle
Some times when I stop at a store and turn the car off (the engine is fully warmed up) run in and out taking me any where from 5-10 min then when I get back in I turn it back on and it immediately revs up to 2k and sits there for about 30 sec then slowly comes back down making a pit stop at 1750 then slowly down to the 600 mark after about a 1min and 15 sec. This has happened about 3 times in the last couple weeks.
heres my questions.
1. Why does this happen?
2. Has anybody had this happen to them?
3. Any theory's?
I have a 96 GXE 5spd
Any thoughts help.
Thank you
Jake

Fast idle plunger is coming out and bumping up your idle speed to much. The fast idle plunger is located down under the TB to the left. There a linkage with an adjustment on it. Study the linkage before you start adjusting it, it's a little weird, watch which way the plunger moves. I can't remember if it goes in when it's cold or comes out. Look at it under both conditions to determine what it's doing, then adjust the linkage to back your idle off.
The plunger works off the throttle body temp, so even if your engine is warm, if the TB is cool, you'll get a high idle briefly until warm coolant is pumped through the TB.

I have a similar problem on my 96 5spd. when I start the car the idle raises to about 1500 sometimes 2000rpm and stays there an abnormally long time (its warm here). and than when it does lower to around 700 it seems to jump between 800 and 600 in neutral and sometimes it even unexpectedly jumps up to 2000 again and stays there for a few seconds before slowly lowering back to the 700 range and the whole dance starts over again. generally only at idle I experience problems but i notice sometimes there seems to be a hesitation under partial throttle in gears 1,2 & sometimes 3. after watching the engine at idle and listening the only thing that seems out of place is a small tick sound that seems to be coming out of one of the coil packs. I plan on changing the coil tomorrow Ill post on whether this was related to the problem Im having (maybe you have a similar problem?).

ok its not my fast idle. Can someone help me please.
I used the motorvate method and cleaned my throttle body. After that cleaning, when coming to a stop my idle stays at about 1100 rpm for a few seconds then drops down to 650. I checked for vacumn leaks and none. Any ideas anyone?
