Black smoke at start and during idle

Black smoke at start and during idle
Hello all,
After searching (and finding no answer), I pose my question:
Recently (past week?) I have noticed that when I start my Max, and while it idles, a black (dark) smoke is coming from the tail pipe. When the engine is revved while it's doing this more smoke comes out (in a larger quantity of course). I don't notice any smoke while driving, but it may just be mixing with the air rather quickly. It smells, but I wouldn't call it sweet, nor would I call it a horrible smell either, crazy huh.
It's been about 1000 miles since my last oil change, and nothing has been done to the car (mechanically wise) recently. I am up to 81k miles, so an aging part could be an issue. I would like to find the problem quickly since I am almost out of my extended warranty.
Thanks for any ideas.

Damn...sounds too complicated for me. I can handle changing light bulbs and rewiring just about anything. When it comes to mechanical "repairs" I tend to leave that to the pros. I guess I will take it in and see what they say. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks.
Thanks.
