Painting calipers

Yes, there is a link in the FAQ, but it contains NO information and the pictures are 100x100 px or so...

Mainly I'm wondering, how hard is it to paint the calipers? I expect the hardest part is taking them off and putting them back on afterwards? Is there anything I should know about what not to paint/ what to paint if I do this?

You don't have to take them off and put them back on. You can buy a kit that is brush on, G2 caliper paint kit. I've used them before and will use them again.

Good price here: http://www.wheelskin.com/g2_brake_caliper_paint.html

Just paint the caliper and torque member (bracket it bolts to). Cover the rotors and don't paint the back of the pads LOLz.

Or you can go to autozone and buy the dupli color brand that has a brush on kit for calipers as well.

I got mine at Pep Boys for $15. One little can will allow you to paint all four of your calipers easily and will leave you with plenty left over for more coats in the future.

Back of the pads? Why not?

Just tape it off and spray. Dont worry about the paint getting places. It will burn off or rub off any part its not supposed to.

i just used making tape to tape up the rotor real good. use a wire brush and attach it to a cordless drill to brush off all dirt on the calipers and around the outer area of the rotor.then use a little soap and water to wash down the areas you want to paint. then use a primer (dont really have to but i did anyway) bout two coats allow bout 5 min between coats. then get high temp engine spray paint what ever color you desire. go about 3 or 4 coats,i then used clear coat and your good to go.just take your time and it will come out nice.

I am going to do this over my spring break. I am putting on SS brake lines so I thought about just taking the caliper and bracket off to get a clean job done on them. It will take longer but I'll be happy with the results.

Heres my write up.

1. jack up front of car.

2. take off front wheels

3. Spray brake cleaner on calipers, let dry.

4. put paper around fenders so yu don't get back spray.

5. paint them suckaz.

6. put wheels on and speed around until they are dry. yay!

Should take you 30 min at the very maximum.

I had the fuzzy dice mod when I turned 16 in my 1988 300ZX. Those were the days.

I was told you should sand them down before spraying. I wish I got to spray mine, but I did not get too, because when I was doing the brake job, I did not think I had enough time to dry it.

here's how i did it for my buddy's vr6 jetta and my max..

#remember to read directions and follow all safety procedures (i am not responsible for idiocy#

1) jack up car, pull wheels off
2) remove calipers and 'brackets'
3) use duct tape and cover hose ends, then take a baggie and cover tape (make sure its tight).. then zip tie the baggie secure, tape hose up on strut
4a) compress pistons, remove bleeder, find bolts to plug bleeder hole etc..
4b) compress pistons, get extra bleeder valves ( approx. $10 ea.), plug open holes
5) sand blast (i use 80grit glass bead)
*if your calipers were painted b4 then chip off old paint, or use propane torch and heat caliper (!wear gloves to handle!) then s'blast*
6) clean up with brake clean, or wax and grease remover
7) mask off piston and other areas you dont want to paint
8) spray light coats of color (make sure to read directions if you dont know how to paint!)
9) once done with color, spray desired amount of clear coat (again in light coats)
10) let paint CURE (not just dry to touch/handle) (i use duplicolor and total cure time is 7 days, i call it good at 5 with a 40k btu heater in garage)
11) reinstall remembering to regrease slide pins etc..

**OR**
-use same steps as above, but replacing steps 5 and 6 with aircraft paint stripper (read directions and use proper safety as stated)

it does take some time but well worth the great result. hope this helps.

ok 1st of 96blackmaxSE calm down. also you should sand it down because painting ontop of dirt and rust is just pointless.I plan on doing this on the max in a few weeks when it warms up. A nice black with a few clear coats on top to give it a ncie shine. sure i have stock breaks. but that doesnt mean they need to look ugly

this is what my calipers look like through my rim as of now

In a few years, when you're my age and off your mama's tit, you'll look back and realize what a complete waste it all was to paint your fugly, stock calipers. Grow up, be a real man and do the 4 piston Z caliper mod and have something that not only looks good but performs well. Painting stock ones is like putting perfume on a pig... or perfume on your mom.

Has it occurred to you that everyone has different tastes and that painting over ugly *** rusty looking metal with nice paint is infact NOT rice?

A-no. it can be done tastefully. If its rice, why do high performance cars come with painted calipers stock?

B-no. I have never seen or heard of a caliper a'ss f'ucking another caliper. (please keep your immaturity to yourself)

C-maybe for you but I like being proud of what I drive.

D-i think twostepping jimi and you should have a play date.

1. That's your opinion.
2. waist = waste
3. I don't think a subtle color like black, or even silver, is RICE, etc....

You're right, no need to SHOW OFF stock calipers, but thats not the goal here...I'm sorry that I don't want to have rusty/dirty calipers.
Id rather paint them black so they don't look sh!tty, but will not be popping out saying "look at meeeee I'm stock!!"

and black_maxed is right...last time I checked, my calipers did not have a sexual orientation.

well most importantly, I hate grammatical errors, so thanks for pointing out the "waist/waste". honestly it gets annoying when simple posts can't have proper grammar. secondly, I agree that black and maybe even silver are ok, but for some reason every max I've seen(on the street) that has had painted calipers, they were always red or bright blue or something. Then you think about the time, money and energy spent on doing something like this and you immediately think, "what else could I have done to my car that actually makes a difference?"

Are you by any chance a lazy *** 16 year old who's parents have a hard time making do chores? How much energy do you possibly need to paint your calipers? It's not hard to remove 5 lugs and 2 bolts to get the caliper off the rotor. And if that is a lot of work, why the hell are you on a car forum? Go pay a mechanic to do all of your troubleshooting and repairs. Unlike you, some of us enjoy busting our asses on our cars.

Good day kid.

are you by chance a trolling SOB who tries to instigate people based on their opinions? while none of the characteristics you labeled me with are correct, that's irrelevant. I was making a point about the time and energy in terms of this project as opposed to a different one. I wasn't complaining about the work in general. For instance giving the car a wax job or degreasing the engine or another task that has a comparable work load and cost yet has higher returns because it's not pointless like painting brakes. Go wack some moles at the arcade or smoke a bowl and chill out. What would your Max say if she knew you were so ill-tempered.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but is this not trolling:

painting the calipers prevents rust...just like waxing the car. I see tons of people on the street that clearly consider waxing their car a waste of time also. But since this is a car forum, alot of us here want our cars looking nice, all of it, including the calipers. This isnt a debate of what is worth it (although a can of caliper spray paint is $5 ), its suppose to be a how-to thread as that was the original question.

and guryon...you should keep the SOB'n to yourself. you are the one that needs to chill out, and its better to make friends than enemies if you plan on getting future help from this site.
