Here is my setup...

Stock manifolds
Cattman Y
Test Pipe
OE Replaced B
OE Replaced Muffler

Heres the in-car...with an 00vi and Stillen Short Ram...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH7Iv24by94

I'll get one of outside tomorrow if you want. It sounds good to me and I am happy with the setup. The only thing I might consider doing is getting a Cattman Catback in the near future.

Resonated test pipe, 22” perforated resonator, ‘turbo’ muffler, beginning with an equal length y-pipe. You know I liked it because now, my 5th gen set-up is this:

Here is my youtube clip of me running against my friends 03 CL Type-S. My windows are closed, but camera picks up a lot of road noise: link

Here is a video of me cruising around my area: link [LARGE FILE]

Exhaust from the inside: link

Exhaust from the outside: link

In these video's I had the following:

- SS AutoChrome Headers and Y-Pipe
- Magnaflow High-Flow Cat
- Budget B-Pipe
- Stock Muffler

I now have the same but instead of the SS y-pipe I have a stock fed-spec pipe (I'm a 99 Cali Spec) and I think it sounds WAY better and it's not as loud but under load it sounds just perfect.

Hope this helps.

Nope, but my exhaust by no means sounds "crappy." At the time I bought my y-pipe I didn't have the funds to buy equal-length stuff. Someday I will go back and make everything equal length, but I view that as merely an improvement to my already not-crappy sounding exhaust. I view things like the OBX full exhaust as sounding like crap, my unequal-length but still very well thought out custom setup as ok/tolerable, and then full equal length setups as "good."

This way helped me at least. So let me get this strait and make sure i herd it right, so with the oem muffler on it stops the rasp for the most part?

I seen the video on youtube like 6-8 months ago, It was a nice race but you should of raced with a quarter tank of gas and have the windows up to get better arodynamics. You could of won the race If you just did these tips. good encounter though.

Most of my crappy noise came from my crappy y-pipe (the headers are good but the y-pipe not so much...maybe I just got a bad one). It is an EBay one after all. Once I changed it out and put a OEM Fed-Spec pipe on, I was much happier. I'm not out for performance, I did my exhaust because I had a bad rusted factory one and decided to go all out and get stainless steel. I couldn't care less about the HP gains.

I'll have to get you guys better clips in the summer but I love how much exhaust sounds now. Not too loud when just driving (it's actually almost like stock with a slightly deeper tone) but when I step on it to gun it...you can really hear the VQ roar.

My windows WERE up (camera picks up too much ambient noise so it sounds like they were down). At least I believe they were. I never drive with my windows down on the interstate and I know for a fact we were discussing the "race" over the phone prior to doing it so I don't know why they would have been down. About the gas, yeah I guess. Don't forget I still haven't tuned my car since my exhaust job. I plan to eventually, but haven't yet.

You know what? I'm bored as hell right now so I'm going to go out and make a new video of my current setup (same as above except for the y-pipe). I'll be back.

Didnt read this last night like I shouldave...anyhow, Ive been looking at the OBXs for a while, and pondered with the Idea of making a dual exhaust(made a thread a month or two ago). Decided that a custom equal length Y would be worth it with the OBXs if you put in your own flex.

But thats out, now that I plan on boosting late summer...

Warpspeed y-pipe (which is the only major component I plan to change ever), stock cat, custom cat-back using Thrush resonator (24" I believe) and a Borla ProXS muffler. The key to my setup is that I have a massive resonator, for one, so it's not at all the loudest of all Maximas I've ever heard, as well as that the few of us on the .org that have the ProXS muffler have all had good results with it. It's just a good sounding muffler.

No doubt my setup would sound THAT much better with an equal-length y-pipe though. I get compliments from people in the car club here at school all the time, which is dominated by domestic V8 owners, so I think that says something. At idle it's very, very deep and the rest of the rev range is a mixed bag of sounds. from idle on up to ~2000 it's still a low tone, from 2000 to 2500 is the only part I really dislike (it's that range where you get natural resonance, eww), and from 2500 on up to the rev limit it just gradually gets more and more high pitched, but in a sophisticated manner, not a ricey fart can sound. I'll see if I can't get some exhaust clips this weekend if I can borrow a camera.

I beg to differ. No unequal-length y-pipe setup is ever going to be the "best." I'd know, I have an unequal-length one. I also have a hard time believing a gutted cat is going to sound very good.

Ok you dissagree thats fine, but I dont know how much difference an equal length pipe is going to sound and I have had plenty of comments on how my exhaust sounds "Like a Porsche" And I did not really hear a difference in the tone after I gutted my cat, only got a little louder. I use new gaskets so that It would seal up well and not be raspy. Whatever I think it sound great.

Meh....Im not thinking its the greatest sound out there but its not raspy so Ive been happy with it. These vids were when I had the test pipe on the CAI, Ive since removed it and went back to the stock resonator I believe its called so it dont have as much intake sound now.

+1. I needed a new exhaust cause mine rotted away. I also do A LOT of highway traveling between March and September so...for me it was perfect. But I went SS AutoChrome cause Budget was out of stock for like 3 weeks and I needed it done "NOW".

I was a stock zorst supporter for a long time, quiet etc... but our cars are SILENT

I drive around in my buddies cars (loud as fawk SRT-4, few S30s that sound AWESOME, E46 with intake, SR'd S13 and S14, EVO etc) and theirs are pretty loud and sound pretty damn good, I don't want something really obnoxious but a good sounding exhaust would make rowing the gears a lot more fun if you ask me.

Honestly I'd love to have a stock A33 muffler on the car. I'm getting "old" (I'm 19 ) and would actually rather have a quiet exhaust anymore. Not one totally silent like the stock A32 one, but one that flows well (for NA purposes, anyway) and has a good tone without being obnoxious.

This is my setup:

SSAC Headers and y-pipe
High flow cat
Cattman cat back

I like the sound a lot, no raspiness at all. I do plan on upgrading to the Cattman headers though. Also, I'm boosted, so I'm not sure if that would make any difference.

Quick Reply: Why do VQ30 exhausts sound like ****?
