To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade. I need opinions. . .
Hey guys.
I need some opinions. I currently have a 96 SE Auto with 159K. I still owe on the car, and I know that there are still a lot of issues I need to address down the road on top of the 2K ive put in it since August, those being brakes, tires, power steering pump, starter, valve cover gaskets twice, and water pump. Since it was so damn cold i couldnt do any of this myself, thats where the prices came in on labor.
I just recently (sunday) found a 2000 SE 5SP in the paper at a local dealer with 59K on it and theyre asking 7900. the car is nice and clean, straight, non smoker, one owner older gentleman so it wasnt rompped on, mobil 1 full synthetic every 3K. traded because his wife cant drive stick. It will need tires soon.
I guess im asking what other people here would do. I know you all dont know my complete situation, but im still in school, but will be working full time this summer. So to Trade or not to Trade. . .
Thanks

if you aint got the money i wouldn't do it, im in the same mess as you are i live on my own full time student and i work full time i bought a 95 max about a month and a half ago i already put mad money into it as repairs, also put in a nav system rims exh/intake. i would just save the money till you graduate or if you find a good job then i would upgrade, i wouldn't try to stress myself.

I would go for it, honestly older cars like ours are a hassle to deal with, repairs add up and in my opinion that's somewhat of a car payment when you have to keep on dumping money into a older car.
My car needs basically a whole new front end, power steering pump, axles, cv joints, nagging leaks, new struts sprints, tires and more and that's about 3 grand right there, that's at least 10 months of car payments to me.
Go for it, older cars suck and the only people who should own them are people who are very knowledgeable and know how to fix it themselves without having to go to a mechanic.
As for those are self mechanics, I don't think cars 13 to 15 years old are for us, too much hassle and these mechanics are way to expensive.
Freaking leaks and two mechanics don't even want to even touch the Max, say it's too much hassle..take it somewhere else....
I wish I could afford a new car with a nice warranty, I'd drop it off, pick up a rental and pick my car back up when it's done.

To the OP, dont throw money into a 96. Im in the same boat as you, i have a 97 with 139k and there only offering me about $1200!! Im trying to get an 06 but they rape you. And on top of that the money i put in for mods is actually devaluing the car. So if you want to sell, sell private.

well guys, i traded today. will pickup on thurs. i dont want to sell the 96 outright. too much of a hassle in my opinion because if i end up gettin stuck with it for longer than i want.
thanks to everyone for all of you input. I still have a 97 so ill be around in the fourth gen forum, but ill probably hang out in the 5th gen more often

Well, sorry guys. Too many things got fuzzy with the scheister of a dealer today. He wanted the title IMMEDIATELY for my car and since i still owe on mine, I cant, and when i ran the VIN on the 2000, there were some fuzzy things. hasnt been licensed in 2 years, and apparently has had to be retitled because of some error. My main problem is the way the dealer is doing me, not the history of the car. It ends up strecthing me too far as it is. I didnt think it would be this much of a payment. So for now I'm still in the 96
Once again, Thanks for all the input.
