clutch possibly slipping

Hi hopefully somebody can help me out, i think my clutch is on its way out but im not 100% sure. When im cruising at a consistent speed and step on the gas, the rpms rise quickly for a second or so then fall before the car starts accelerating. It seems to me like the clutch is slipping, but this only happens when i accelerate within a gear. When i shift, the car shifts very smooth and doesnt seem to slip after shifting. The clutch still has the same amount of pressure when depressed and still engages at the same point that it always has. I noticed this right after having the left axle and ball joint replaced, but i cant see how that could relate. If im wrong let me know. But anyways, does this sound like the clutch needs to replaced or somehting else. thanks

The clutch pressure is the same because that is spring powered. You clutch IS slipping if you step on the gas and the RPMs move but you dont. The clutch will need to be replaced eventually if youre careful with it and sooner if youre not; but from what you said I'd say its 100% on its way out. However my friends 200 had a slipping clutch for a while before it actually went, I'd say like 5-8months. However that all depends on how much you drive and how you drive.

I think the best test is 5th gear at 2000 Rpms and floor it. Should see equal rise of speed and the RPMS shouldnt really jump. I remember that from a while ago.

Clutch Slipping

My 97 SE just passed 109,000 miles and the clutch started slipping. I had installed however a custom exhaust with headers, so the extra torque might have hurried its demise. It had the same symptoms as yours and went bad in 2 months, but I have a lead foot. If u don't have a lead foot it might last longer. I spent $300 on an Exedy stage 1 clutch, but since I'm not a mechanic it cost me $450. in labor, which included resurfacing the flywheel.
I believe I could have had the oem done for half of that.
You might be able to find a group buy here at Maxima.Org, so look for it. Whatever u do, do shop around, because I found the same clutch for $200 more elsewhere. It pays to shop.

put it in 4th and rev to about 1400. dump the clutch. if the car doesn't instantly die, the clutch is slipping. if it does die instantly, you're fine.
