WINDSHIELD CHIP: dealer vs canadian tire vs myself

Ok so i have a windshield glass chip about a cm in size and nissan dealer quoted me around 90$ cad and canadian tire for $75cad. Walmart has a self windshield repair kit for 12$ cad. What do you guys suggest? Has anyone ever tried repairing it on their own?

Thanks guys

I would not do it myself. Go with canadian tire.
Also, call your insurance - sometimes you can get it done for free.

i agree with ^^^. Check with your insurance first to see if they would help you out in getting it replaced. I personally wouldnt do it on my own.

What the dealership and Canadian Tire are going to do is the same thing as that kit. If your insurance covers it, do that. If not, use the kit. They're simple as can be to use (second hand knowledge, have a friend that used it successfully).

Yeah but if you screw it up then you are liable and need to find a new windshield. I would do as everyone else said and call your insurance company. I know I have glass as part of my comprehensive coverage.

What is there to screw up though? From what I understand, you put liquid on glass, it fills the cracks and that's all there is to it. I mean seriously, it's the exact same stuff that the dealer and the repair places use. If it doesn't work, comprehensive insurance covers windshields regardless of who's liable or the reason why it's messed up. I highly doubt the poster has the insurance information of the rock that dinged his window anyway... and he may only have minimum liability, which doesn't cover a windshield replacement. If so, it's definitely worth a shot.

There ought to be a law... all rocks should be required to carry insurance!

call insurance, if its in your line of vision and you have glass coverage then they have to replace it, otherwise dont mess with the kit. the proper way i do it with my repair kit is apply liquid filler, use pressure cup to compress into cracks, then uv light to harden it, otherwise a new windshield is cheap go to an autoglass place and ask for cash price

When your windshield is in need of repair your insurance company usually picks the replacement offer from a preexisting list of providers which may or more likely may not offer the best deal on windshield chip.

I had the "repair" done on the BMW because the insurance said it would be free and at the time I didn't want the glass replaced and find issues with the rain sensor and rearview mirror. The repair leaves much to be desired and that's done by a pro with a vacuum pump to remove air bubbles and also using a UV light to harden the epoxy. It's a white pimple on the glass, nowhere near perfect.

I had the entire glass replaced on the Maxima for $210, well worth it. The Chinese glass seems in no way inferior to the OEM, a misconception I had for over 10 years. The $210 got rid of 12 years of scratches and chips. Repairing one chip wouldn't have done that...

just make sure wherever you take it, does it right, my bro in laws wrx started rusting around the windshield after he had his replaced because they did not do it right!

call insurance and see what they say, worst thing could happen is they will say no, then you take it to the dealer or Canadian tire (may as well check apple auto glass as well)
